The likelihood of a typhoon warning signal being issued in Hong Kong over the weekend is low, as Tropical Cyclone Kujira is set to weaken under the influence of Dolphin, but airlines nonetheless cancelled at least 22 flights between the city and Japan.
The Observatory said early on Wednesday that Tropical Cyclone Kujira, meaning “whale” in Japanese, would linger over the central part of the South China Sea near the Philippine island of Luzon.
It would maintain a distance of about 700km (435 miles) or more from Hong Kong, and its direct threat to the city was “not high”, according to the forecaster.
“With Dolphin continuing to move westwards, Kujira will move eastward towards Luzon and weaken gradually under the influence of Dolphin,” the Observatory said.
“Unless Kujira adopts a track closer to the coast of Guangdong, the chance of issuing the typhoon standby signal, No 1, is rather low.”
Dolphin, which had been downgraded from a super typhoon to a severe typhoon, would move westwards towards Okinawa and the East China Sea, according to the forecaster.
The influence of its outer airstream was expected to subside, leading to mostly fine and hot weather in Hong Kong over the weekend after a gloomy and wet July.
“It will be extremely hot over inland areas. High temperatures will also trigger thundery showers,” the Observatory said.
The forecaster’s data showed that Hong Kong recorded 790.3mm (31.1 inches) of rainfall last month, more than double the normal July level, while the duration of sunshine was 38 per cent shorter than usual.
Dolphin was named by Hong Kong after the Chinese white dolphins living in the city’s waters.

It had developed into a super typhoon, with maximum sustained winds near its centre reaching 240km/h (149mph), before weakening into a severe typhoon on Monday, with winds of 175km/h.
As it moved closer to Okinawa, several flights between Hong Kong and the island scheduled between Thursday and Saturday were cancelled.
Budget carrier HK Express cancelled 12 flights between Hong Kong and Okinawa as well as two flights between the city and Ishigaki.
All the cancelled flights were code-share services with the city’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways.
Greater Bay Airlines also cancelled four flights between Hong Kong and Okinawa scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Hong Kong Airlines has also called off four flights operating on the same route scheduled on Friday.
It also retimed two flights scheduled on Thursday, moving their departure three hours earlier than planned.
