Hong Kong issues amber rainstorm warning amid Ching Ming Festival
Observatory warns of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas, and that heavy rain may lead to flash floods

Hong Kong issued an amber rainstorm warning on Sunday afternoon in response to intense thundery showers influenced by a trough of low pressure, coinciding with the city’s marking of the Ching Ming Festival.
The Observatory said in the morning that a band of intense thundery showers over the seas south of the city had been gradually edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta.
At 2.05pm, the forecaster issued the amber rainstorm warning, which meant heavy rain exceeding 30mm had fallen or was expected to fall in an hour and was likely to continue. The alert was cancelled at 5.40pm.
The Observatory warned of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas, and that heavy rain could lead to flash floods.
The forecaster earlier said that showers would be heavier in some areas, with several squally thunderstorms expected.
