The Hong Kong Observatory has cancelled an amber rainstorm warning in force for an hour as downpours lashed parts of the city.
The warning was issued at 10am on Monday and cancelled an hour later. An amber rainstorm warning indicates heavy and persistent rain exceeding 30mm (1.2 inches) an hour falling over Hong Kong.
“An area of intense thundery showers is affecting the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta. Meanwhile, a southerly airstream is affecting the coast of Guangdong,” the forecaster said in the morning.
“The trough of low pressure over the northern part of southern China is expected to edge closer to the coastal areas gradually.”
The Observatory cautioned residents about the risk of river flooding, despite the cancellation of the rainstorm warning.
“There will be flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas. People who are likely to be affected should take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risks posed by the heavy rain and flooding,” the forecaster said.
It also warned of violent gusts, with winds hitting 100km/h (62mph) at Lau Fau Shan at around 10am.
