Hong Kong’s fourth locally acquired chikungunya fever case resulted from a new source of infection unrelated to previous ones, health authorities have confirmed, urging those living in the same area as the patient to seek medical advice if they show symptoms.
The Centre for Health Protection said on Wednesday that the source of the fourth case’s infection was genetically distinct from the previous imported and locally acquired cases.
The fourth locally acquired case is a 68-year-old woman living in Tung Hei Court in Shau Kei Wan. The case came to light after she sought help at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan last week.
“The result [of genome analysis of the patient] indicated that the genetic sequence of her viral sample differed from those of other imported chikungunya fever cases recorded in Hong Kong and the three local chikungunya fever cases in Wong Tai Sin and Tsing Yi, suggesting separate sources of infection,” the centre said.
“We cannot rule out the possibility that an earlier, undiagnosed patient in an area visited by the patient transmitted the virus to mosquitoes, which then infected her.”
The centre urged residents living in the vicinity of the patient’s residence to seek medical advice or contact the organisation immediately if they developed symptoms such as a fever, rash or joint pain since October 15.


No new symptomatic persons had been identified in the past four days, while four individuals with mild symptoms had tested negative for the chikungunya virus, the centre said.
As of 5pm on Wednesday, the centre has conducted assessments for more than 4,950 people through a health consultation booth at Hing Tung Shopping Centre in Shau Kei Wan, its inquiry hotline, questionnaire surveys and door-to-door visits at Tung Hei Court.
Leaflets on chikungunya fever prevention and questionnaire surveys were distributed to about 3,000 households in the affected areas.
Authorities have also enhanced their mosquito control operations.
Health authorities said the latest locally acquired case had not travelled outside the city in the past two months, adding that her residence and usual areas of activity did not overlap with neighbourhoods where past cases had been found.
The first such case was reported on October 26 in Wong Tai Sin. The second was recorded five days later and shared the same source of infection as the first, while the third was reported in Tsing Yi on November 3.
The number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong this year now stands at 64. Aside from the four locally acquired cases, the other 60 are imported infections.
