A Hong Kong secondary school has begun the new academic year without a principal while authorities vet a replacement for the former head, who was fired for swearing at security guards during a Singapore study trip.
Former lawmaker Edmund Wong Chun-sek, who is also a manager of San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School, said on Tuesday that the Education Bureau was currently conducting background checks on the candidate.
The school, located in Tuen Mun, was under the temporary leadership of its deputy head for now, he added.
“We have completed the recruitment procedures and decided on one candidate, but the Education Bureau is still vetting the appointment,” Wong said. “Of course, the sooner we welcome the new principal, the better.”
Wong said the wider process could take time since the bureau had taken three months to vet the previous incumbent.
But he stressed that the school would operate as normal, adding that teachers and the institution’s governance team were on the same page.
In response to the South China Morning Post’s inquiry, the bureau said on Tuesday that it had reminded the school to strictly follow the relevant procedures in its application and take appropriate administrative measures to ensure that its operations were not disrupted and that students’ wellbeing was safeguarded.
The school started recruiting for a new principal earlier this year following the dismissal of Lee Cheuk-hing, who had held the role since 2022, in June after he was filmed swearing at two security guards while leading a study trip to Singapore.


The viral footage, which was filmed in late May, shows Lee swearing in Cantonese and shouting words such as “impolite”, “shut up” and “go away” at the two female guards.
The two guards appear visibly upset in the clip and point their fingers at Lee during the exchange.
In the same video, Lee is noticeably more polite when interacting with a passer-by, who appeared to be ethnically Chinese, prompting accusations of racial discrimination.
Lee also faced allegations of sexist behaviour after another video showed him deliberately dropping a HK$1,000 (US$127) banknote and responding “women are this greedy” when a female student reached for the money.
After the row came to light, Lee released a tearful video apologising to Hongkongers and “all sectors” in Singapore, urging students not to follow his example, and submitted his resignation on May 28.
The school’s management committee said Lee’s behaviour had violated the professional code of conduct for teaching staff, especially guidelines stipulated by the Education Bureau. While Lee had requested his last day to be August 31, the committee instead decided to sack him on June 3.
As part of the hunt for his replacement, the school said applicants would need to have “excellent character”.
Wong said on Tuesday that the recruitment process was “in a bit of a hurry”, but added that it was understandable that the bureau could need time for checks.
