Doctors, nurses and students at HKSH Medical Group in Hong Kong swapped their clinical routines for a day of fitness and fundraising, inspiring all to “throw kindness and catch health”.
The staff-led activity on December 19 formed part of HKSH OSC Month, a fundraising campaign in aid of Operation Santa Claus (OSC) – a cause the group has supported for the 17th consecutive year.
Awards were given to employees and teams across departments in recognition of taking part, teamwork and sustained effort throughout the campaign.
While donations were raised, the focus was equally on participation, with activities designed to get people moving and working together.
Dr Joseph Chan Woon-tong, the group’s chief medical officer, said the hospital’s support for OSC dated back to 2009, when staff first began organising collective fundraising efforts.
Chan, who is also the deputy medical superintendent of Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, said that “as healthcare professionals, we want to help not only our patients but also people in need across the community”.
“Operation Santa Claus supports many organisations connected to medical, mental health and social care, so it aligns closely with what we do.”
Over the years, the hospital has built its fundraising around physical activity – from charity walkathons to ball-throwing challenges that test hand-eye coordination as well as stamina.
Chan said this approach helped staff care for their own well-being while supporting others.

“Exercise is important, but the act of taking part together matters just as much,” he said. “When colleagues join in, they feel connected. That sense carries over into daily work.”
The charity day is part of a broader series of staff engagement and community activities organised throughout the year.
Through the hospital’s “Village Volunteers” network, which Chan leads, staff join walks, sports, arts sessions and community visits, including outreach to the elderly and schools.
That culture of taking part also extends to the hospital’s nursing school, where OSC activities have become a regular part of campus life.
Professor Agnes Tiwari, the school’s head, said students were encouraged to contribute to fundraising efforts in small but frequent ways.
“Almost every day, our students take part in whatever activity is happening,” she said. “It may only be for a few minutes, but it builds habits and shared responsibility.”
Supporting the campaign also served a teaching purpose, Tiwari added. When nursing educators join activities alongside students, they model care and compassion in action, allowing students to learn through observation rather than instruction.
While friendly competition among hospital departments helps maintain energy, the emphasis remains on teamwork and collegiality.
“That is important in nursing, where people rely on one another,” said Tiwari.
Queenie Chan, the hospital’s quality and safety manager, said organising annual fundraising activities had become a practical exercise in teamwork and problem-solving.
This year, her department brought together several teams that do not normally work closely.
Preparing for OSC created valuable opportunities for collaboration and shared learning, she said.

She added that this year’s plans were adjusted, with some games cancelled out of respect for Tai Po fire victims, and fundraising efforts shifted to selling lucky bags instead.
Despite modest targets, the focus remained on teamwork and delivering on the support colleagues had offered.
OSC, jointly established by the Post and public broadcaster RTHK in 1988, has raised around HK$396 million (US$51 million) for more than 365 charity projects and helped more than 100,000 people over the years.
Alongside its annual fundraising drive, it is also leading an emergency appeal to meet the specific needs of residents affected by the deadly fire in Tai Po.
All proceeds will support this year’s 13 OSC-funded charity projects and community partners involved in the fire relief efforts.
