Airports in China’s Zhejiang and Fujian provinces remained on high alert for potential delays and cancellations as Typhoon Saudel approached landfall on Wednesday, after multiple flights were cancelled in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Saudel, which entered the East China Sea early on Wednesday morning, prompted the cancellation of 16 flights at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport. Affected carriers included Peach, China Airlines, EVA Air, Starlux and Thai Lion Air.
Hong Kong Airlines fully cancelled its HX658/HX659 flights between the city and Okinawa in Japan, while HK Express rescheduled its Okinawa-bound services to August 27 in response to the weather system.
If it does make landfall on the Chinese mainland, Saudel would be the seventh typhoon to do so this year. Previous ones, including Bavi, brought torrential rain and floods.
The National Meteorological Centre forecasts that Saudel will make landfall between Thursday night and Friday morning along the coast from Xiangshan in eastern Zhejiang, to Fuqing in southeast Fujian province.


Zhejiang province has raised its emergency response to Level 3 – the third highest of four levels – and closed all coastal scenic areas, evacuating more than 4,100 tourists from island resorts.
More than 90 passenger ferry routes in Zhejiang had also been suspended because of gale-force winds as of 10am on Monday, according to the Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration.
The impact on regional shipping has been severe.
Local media reported that in the city of Taizhou, all 18 passenger ferry routes had been suspended, 32 maritime construction projects halted and 67 associated vessels relocated to safe waters.
In Ningbo, 22 passenger routes have been suspended and 39 offshore construction projects fully halted. Wenzhou has suspended all 13 coastal passenger routes, with 24 offshore engineering projects shut down.
Across the province, work has stopped at 146 offshore construction projects and 527 associated vessels have been moved to safe anchorages. More than 3,300 fishing vessels are now sheltered in ports.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Narra made its third landfall at around 11am on Wednesday, arriving in Wuchuan in Guangdong province, southern China, with Force 6 winds before rapidly losing strength.




In southwest Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the impact on maritime traffic has been equally severe.
The Beihai to Weizhou Island route – the region’s busiest passenger ferry link – has been completely suspended. A total of 78 coastal water projects across Guangxi have been shut down, with all construction vessels and personnel evacuated from the water.
The Qiongzhou Strait has been fully closed to roll-on/roll-off traffic since Tuesday, with ports including Xinhai, Xiuying and the southern railway link in Hainan’s capital Haikou shutting the gates. The suspension is expected to last through to Wednesday afternoon.
Despite Narra’s weakening, its residual circulation continues to dump torrential rain across Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan after days of non-stop downpours.
Local authorities have urged residents in affected areas to monitor official forecasts and prepare for potential mountain torrents, urban flooding and other secondary disasters.
