Residents and rescuers in the Tibet autonomous region paused for three minutes on Tuesday morning to remember the victims of last week’s mudslide disaster.
Sirens sounded for three minutes from 9.55am at the Gyirong Port police station, with similar memorials at rescue and road-reopening sites throughout the region, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
More than 1,000 people died and thousands remain missing along the China-Nepal border area after a glacier collapsed at Langtang Lirung on the Nepalese side last Wednesday.
The Gyirong Port was overwhelmed with mud and debris as the flow from the collapse swept through a valley and back into Nepal.
As of 2pm on Tuesday, 1,058 bodies had been recovered from the Nepalese side, with 4,606 people missing. Chinese authorities reported 16 confirmed deaths and 546 people missing, in their latest update on Sunday.
The missing include 261 foreign nationals on the Chinese side and more than 500 foreign nationals in Nepal.




An Australian feared missing had contacted Australian officials from Tibet on Tuesday, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed.
The person was receiving consular support and had spoken with their family, the department said, declining to give further details due to privacy obligations.
While Nepalese authorities collect DNA samples from remains to help identify victims, China has said it will send DNA specialists to the disaster zone to help its neighbour.
The Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday that China was also shipping a second batch of aid to Nepal, including drones and DNA testing, water purification and lighting equipment.


The remembrances took place under the shadow of a “major risk” of further glacier collapses, according to China’s Ministry of Water Resources.
There is also the risk of barrier lakes forming as landslides block the rivers and trap water.
Water levels in a barrier lake formed on the Purepuqiang River near the port after last week’s glacier collapse had fallen, reducing risks, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Emergency crews are in the area monitoring any further build-ups.
Ministry official Yang Dan told CCTV that dams could become unstable, “loosely structured” and easily breached if the water built up or if an earthquake occurred.
A breach could unleash large volumes of water and destructive flooding downstream, Yang said.


Last week’s disaster severed power, communications and transport links to the area but rescuers are making progress.
As of Tuesday, repair crews were within 800 metres (2,625 feet) of Gyirong Port, having cleared sections of national highway G216, according to CCTV. Power crews have been racing to restore electricity along reopened sections of the highway.
The broadcaster said repair operations on the highway had entered an “extremely challenging” stage, with rain sending water rushing down three channels on the mountainside, disrupting construction and raising the risk that repaired sections could be damaged again.
The China Meteorological Administration has forecast persistent rain in Gyirong county until Wednesday, warning that it could complicate rescue operations and transport and increase the risk of secondary hazards.
