A Taiwanese company with mainland China subsidiaries has fired the nephew of Taiwan’s interior minister, Liu Shyh-fang, whom Beijing blames for Taipei’s hostile cross-strait policies.
In a statement issued on Wednesday night, a Jiangxi-province-based subsidiary of Taiwan’s Long Time Technology Co Ltd said Yen Wen-chun had been dismissed from all positions at the firm and its mainland units, effective April 7.
Yen is a nephew of Liu, who is on Beijing’s sanctions list for allegedly undermining cross-strait relations and promoting Taiwan independence.
The statement said the company “solemnly pledged” to strictly require all employees to “stay away from any political behaviour that undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait”.


It also said its corporate funds were used “solely for pure industrial research and development and business development”, while “strictly prohibiting any resources from being used to directly or indirectly support individuals or organisations with specific political stances, such as those advocating ‘Taiwan independence’ or violating the one-China principle”.
Beijing in January added Liu and Taiwan’s Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao to its sanctions list targeting “staunch Taiwan independence figures”.
This means they and their families are banned from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, and all companies associated with them are prohibited from engaging in profit-making activities in mainland China.
In announcing the move, Beijing accused Liu of “blatantly promoting separatist ‘Taiwan independence’ rhetoric”, as well as “persecuting mainland spouses in Taiwan and actively creating obstacles to cross-strait personnel exchanges”.
Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary. Most countries, including the United States, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent state, but Washington is opposed to any attempt to take the self-governed island by force and is committed to supplying it with weapons.
Yen served as a general manager at Long Time Technology, which is headquartered in Taiwan’s New Taipei City. The company has promoted Terry Hu, the general manager of its subsidiary in Jiangxi province, to replace Yen, according to the company’s official website.
The Taiwanese company, established in 2009, primarily produces lithium-ion battery anode materials. It has three subsidiaries in mainland China – in Jiangxi, Guangdong and Yunnan provinces.
In February, Hong Kong-based daily Ta Kung Pao reported that Yen, while holding senior positions in the Long Time group and its mainland subsidiaries, had allegedly provided political donations to Liu. The report triggered an investigation by Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office.
Responding to the Long Time statement, Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Chen Binhua said on Wednesday that the mainland government would not allow “those who support secessionism and damage cross-strait relations” to make money on the mainland while backing “secessionist activities on the other hand”, according to state news agency Xinhua.
He stressed that these measures targeted only a few secessionists and did not affect most people or businesses in Taiwan, Xinhua reported.
Meanwhile on Thursday, mainland police said they had detained an internet user in a central province. The influencer is accused of using an unauthorised AI-generated digital avatar of Cheng Li-wun, the chairwoman of Taiwan’s main opposition party – the Kuomintang – during a live-stream, in an alleged bid to attract viewers and boost sales.


The cybersecurity bureau of Beijing’s Ministry of Public Security said the suspect, surnamed Xing and living in Datong, Shanxi province, said he wanted to leverage media attention generated during Cheng’s visit to the mainland last month.
Her trip included a meeting with the Communist Party’s general secretary Xi Jinping – the first such talks between the respective party leaders in nine years – in which Beijing played up a message of peace and economic cooperation with Taiwan.
The bureau statement noted that Xing had been placed under administrative detention by Shanxi police, a measure that typically does not lead to formal indictment.
