At least 13 Chinese citizens have been injured in the Myanmar earthquake – and more casualties are expected, the country’s embassy said on Sunday.
“As rescue operations in the disaster area are still under way, the number of casualties may continue to rise. We do not yet have information on the casualties among local overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese,” the embassy told the state broadcaster CCTV.
It said it had received and handled hundreds of requests for help from Chinese citizens and helped dozens of people locate their missing relatives and friends.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday killed more than 1,700 people and injured over 4,000.
Several Chinese rescue teams are now working in the quake-hit areas. State news agency Xinhua said they had already found one survivor under a collapsed hospital in the capital city of Naypyidaw, after being trapped for nearly 40 hours.
The head of the ruling junta Senior General Min Aung Hlaing visited one of the rescue teams in the capital.
The epicentre of the quake was close to Mandalay, the nation’s second largest city, which is a hub for Chinese merchants supplying jade and timber. Han Chinese reportedly made up half the population of the city in 2010.


China is a major source of investment for Myanmar. Chinese business interests in Myanmar are primarily concerned with electric power, mining resources, and textiles and garments.
Total Chinese investment in Myanmar stood at US$21.9 billion as of July 2023, accounting for nearly a quarter of foreign investment inflows to Myanmar, according to Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce.
