Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto Velasco arrives in China on Sunday for his first official visit as his country navigates increasing US pressure to roll back Chinese trade ties.
The two-day visit will take place at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said in Beijing on Thursday.
He said China expected the visit to be an opportunity to deepen mutual political trust and cooperation, and “promote the steady growth” of ties to better benefit both nations.
The Mexican foreign ministry earlier confirmed the visit in an overnight social media post, noting that Velasco would meet Wang in Beijing and also inaugurate Mexico’s new consulate in Chongqing.
“This visit will allow for strengthening political dialogue and the cooperation agenda between both countries,” the post read.
Velasco, who took office in April, faces a delicate diplomatic balance. Mexico’s largest trading partner, the United States, is pressuring the Latin American nation to mirror its trade barriers against Chinese steel and aluminium as it reviews the 2020 US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The push – first reported by Bloomberg in July – is widely believed to be aimed at restricting Beijing’s economic footprint in North America.


Chinese companies, including major electric vehicle manufacturers such as BYD, have rapidly expanded their industrial footprint in Mexico as part of a nearshoring trend. However, Washington has repeatedly vowed to curb China’s presence in its neighbouring country, warning that the firms might be using Mexico as a transshipment hub to bypass US tariffs.
Another Bloomberg report last month said that Mexico was considering new anti-dumping measures on select Chinese and other foreign goods, alongside higher import tariffs on others. Such a move would deepen Mexico’s alignment with the US as it seeks to protect and renew the USMCA trade pact, which underpins its preferential access to the US market.
Trade tensions with China flared after Mexico approved sweeping tariffs of up to 50 per cent on more than 1,400 products from non-FTA countries, a measure that took effect on January 1.
The move was widely seen as an attempt to appease Washington ahead of the high-stakes USMCA review talks that began in July.
