The head of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Department, Liu Haixing, hailed China and Cuba as “good brothers” during a meeting with Cuban officials in Havana, in a show of solidarity as Washington ramps up pressure on the island.
According to an official Chinese readout, Liu on Sunday held talks with Emilio Lozada Garcia, the Communist Party of Cuba’s international relations chief, describing China and Cuba as “good friends, good comrades and good brothers” and saying ties were at an “unprecedented new height”.
The Chinese official said the two countries had consistently supported each other through a shifting global landscape, deepening their friendship.
“China has always viewed and handled China-Cuba relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and will continue to, as always, adhere to the long-term friendly policy between China and Cuba,” Liu said.
“[China will] support Cuba’s path of socialism, advance pragmatic cooperation between China and Cuba, and work with Cuba to uphold international fairness and justice and oppose hegemony and power politics.”
It comes as the Donald Trump administration has been piling more pressure on Havana, following months of threats by the American president to seize control of the island.


Last month, Washington accused Beijing of running three intelligence-gathering facilities in Cuba, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing the Cuban regime as “the leading sponsor of radical leftism and Third Worldism in the United States” for more than six decades.
Washington last week sanctioned a senior Cuban military official in Beijing, accusing him of helping procure military-related equipment from China for the island’s armed forces.
Beijing has long rejected the claim that it operates intelligence facilities in Cuba, with officials urging Washington to stop its threat of force or any form of unilateral sanctions and blockade against Havana.
“China will continue firmly supporting Cuba in defending its national sovereignty and opposing external interference,” a foreign ministry spokesman said last month.
Liu said the Chinese Communist Party was ready to work with the Communist Party of Cuba to sustain the momentum of high-level exchanges and cement the “special friendship” between the two countries.
According to the readout, Garcia said Cuba was currently at a “crucial juncture in its revolution and development” and thanked Beijing for its support and help.
Beijing this month delivered a second round of 5,000 solar energy equipment sets to Cuba. The Caribbean island has been hit by frequent nationwide blackouts as a US-imposed oil blockade strains its ageing ⁠energy infrastructure.

Also on Sunday, Liu held talks with Roberto Morales Ojeda, Politburo member of the Communist Party of Cuba, discussing strategic issues around the long-term development of bilateral ties, according to a separate Chinese statement.
During that meeting, Liu said Beijing was willing to work with Havana to deepen strategic cooperation, safeguard international fairness and justice, and “continuously push China-Cuba relations to a new level”.
“China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, opposes external interference, and will, as always, provide assistance to the best of its ability,” he said.
