US President Donald Trump’s war on Iran has not only exposed White House decision-making flaws but also “clear cracks” within the Republican Party and his political base, observers in China say, warning of the risks posed to the party’s midterm prospects.
As the US-Israel war with Iran enters its fifth week, mixed signals from Trump and his administration continue to trigger questions about the trajectory of Operation Epic Fury and the exit strategy.
Trump has repeatedly claimed victory, most recently on Tuesday, when he said that a deal on ending the war could be in sight.
But on Wednesday, the White House warned that Trump was ready to “unleash hell” on Iran if Tehran did not accept a peace deal. On Friday, Trump warned that the war with Iran was “not finished”, and that the US had thousands of targets left to strike in Iran.
The risk of escalation continued to soar over the weekend as American military officials announced on Saturday that more than 3,500 US troops had arrived in the Middle East.
The Pentagon is reportedly preparing a “final blow” against Iran, including weeks of ground operations.
Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen also entered the war on Saturday, launching ballistic missiles at Israel for the first time in the current conflict.
In the US, demonstrators in cities across the nation rallied over the weekend as part of the “No Kings” protests against the war, federal immigration enforcement and the rising cost of living.


There is growing disquiet within Trump’s support base over the handling of the conflict, with unease also appearing to mount among officials.
On March 17, top counterterrorism official Joe Kent resigned over the war on Iran, saying the country had posed “no imminent threat” to America and he could not “in good conscience support the ongoing war”.
Chinese observers noted that Kent’s resignation – coupled with Trump’s inconsistent messaging on the objectives, scale and duration of the operation – had exposed the deepening fractures within the president’s war room.
The administration failed to fully prepare for the military campaign, they argued, citing a lack of in-depth assessment and long-term planning.
Diao Daming, a professor of international relations at Renmin University, said the Trump administration’s views on the war broadly fell into three camps.
One, an establishment wing of mainstream political and economic policymakers, who were seeking a quick off-ramp from the conflict to contain oil prices and limit electoral fallout.
The second, a group of Republican hawks such as Senator Lindsey Graham and Senate intelligence committee chairman Tom Cotton, who were pushing for greater pressure on Iran and seeking regime change. But this camp’s influence might be waning in the face of a looming protracted conflict, Diao noted.


The third camp was the Maga faction, which believed from the start that the US should not have got involved in an endless foreign war that brought no benefit to Americans, Diao said. This group had grown deeply disappointed with Trump for breaking his “America first” promise and wanted the conflict to end as quickly as possible by whatever means possible.
“As the Republican coalition’s biggest common denominator, Trump has been able to unify its different factions by emphasising an ‘America first’ agenda and the promise to ‘Make America Great Again’,” Diao said.
“But his decision to use force in Iran may have weakened that cohesion, heightening internal disagreements.”
Zhao Minghao, a professor at the Institute of International Studies at Shanghai’s Fudan University, said: “Kent’s resignation highlights clear cracks within the Trump administration, particularly inside the Maga camp, over the war with Iran.”
This internal unease could date back to June last year, when the United States and Israel attacked Iranian nuclear and military facilities in a brief but intense 12-day war.
The divisions were likely to endure, Zhao cautioned, adding that the war’s ultimate outcome would play a decisive role in either deepening or reshaping these rifts over America’s global strategy and approach to foreign intervention.
He also noted “a subtle division” within the Maga camp – between elite opinion leaders who strongly questioned the rationale of the war and grass-roots voters who largely continued to support Trump’s actions.


The war had already exceeded Trump’s initial four-week timeline, but a dramatic policy reversal was still possible, Zhao said, given his established pattern of unpredictable foreign policy.
Li Haimo, an assistant professor in the political science department at Fudan University, said opposition within the Republican camp came from diverse quarters, including those concerned that war with Iran could undermine the strategic US focus on China.
He pointed to well-known national conservatives such as Vice-President J.D. Vance, Senator Josh Hawley and key White House aide Stephen Miller, inner circle members who broadly support Trump but have argued against deploying ground troops and called for a swift victory declaration and withdrawal.
A poll released on March 18 bolstered their suggestion. Commissioned by the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and The American Conservative magazine, the poll found 79 per cent of Americans who voted for Trump in 2024 would support a declaration of victory and quick end to the war.
As oil prices rose, economic pressures mounted, and anxieties over the election outlook intensified, the establishment wing’s influence was likely to grow, Diao said.
The White House says talks with Iran are proceeding apace, with Trump asserting that Tehran is desperate to reach a deal, even though Iran has yet to agree to the US proposal to end the war.
If the war dragged on and deepened internal divisions, the Maga faction might become more isolationist, conservative and extreme, potentially distancing itself from the Republican mainstream, Diao said, warning of reduced turnout at the November midterm elections.
He said affordability and the cost of living were core issues hurting Republicans even before the Iran war, and heavier losses might be on the cards as the conflict sends energy and food prices soaring.
“Even before the Iran war, Republicans were already expected to lose the House [of Representatives], while only narrowly holding the Senate. More recently, the possibility of Republicans also losing the Senate [has] increased.”
