China called for a halt to the “unjust war” in Iran in a phone call between top diplomats on Friday and expressed willingness to work with France to prevent other nations from being drawn into the conflict.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Emmanuel Bonne, diplomatic adviser to the French president, that as members of the UN Security Council, the two countries should work together to firmly uphold international law and prevent the world from reverting to the “law of the jungle”.
“The urgent priorities are, firstly, to curb the spread of the conflict and prevent other countries from becoming further involved,” Wang said, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.
He called for a unified international push for an immediate ceasefire and further mediation efforts, urging the United Nations and the Security Council to fulfil their responsibility in restoring regional peace and stability.
With the exception of the United States, Wang has spoken about the US-Israel war on Iran with counterparts from all permanent UN Security Council members, including talks with Russia and Britain.
The escalating conflict “has not only hit global energy supply stability but also caused a massive humanitarian crisis”, Wang said on Friday.
“Resorting to force will not solve the problem, and the unjust war should not go on,” he added.
Wang’s comments – which came on the 23rd anniversary of the Iraq war – marked the first time Beijing has used the term “unjust war” to describe the Iran conflict.
The term had previously been used by some academics to describe the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, which resulted in a protracted conflict and years of regional instability.
“History and reality have shown us time and again that the use of force is not a solution and armed conflicts will only create new hatred,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Friday when asked if Beijing had a message for Muslim communities as they celebrated the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Now entering its fourth week, the US-Israel war on Iran has continued to spill over into other countries in the region, with strikes continuing on Saturday. In Iran alone, more than 1,400 people have been killed and over 18,000 have been wounded since the start of the conflict, according to reports.
The escalating conflict has led US President Donald Trump to request a delay of a high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing by “five to six weeks”.
Just hours after telling reporters that he was not interested in a ceasefire, Trump said on social media on Friday evening, Washington time, that the United States was considering “winding down” military operations against Iran.
The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – a vital shipping lane south of Iran through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas flows – has sent energy prices soaring.
In another attempt to stabilise global energy markets, the US on Friday night issued a temporary 30-day sanctions waiver for the purchase of Iranian oil already at sea.
The move follows an earlier general licence by the US allowing countries to buy Russian oil and petroleum products – which had faced sanctions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 – that were loaded on tankers as of March 12.
