Beijing is willing to work with Ottawa to deepen communication and accelerate cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Canadian counterpart in another sign of improving ties between the two countries.
According to a Chinese foreign ministry statement, Wang told Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in a phone call on Tuesday that the two countries could strengthen coordination in areas including foreign affairs and commerce, and “properly address their legitimate concerns and promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of China-Canada relations”.
“China is willing to strengthen communication with Canada, take effective actions, accelerate the resumption of exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and consolidate the momentum of further improvement and development of China-Canada relations in a pragmatic and constructive manner,” Wang said.
Tuesday’s call came amid efforts by both sides to repair strained relations and followed a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on October 31 on the sidelines of a multilateral forum in South Korea.

The meeting – the first formal talks between the leaders of China and Canada since 2017 – resulted in both sides agreeing to restart exchanges and cooperation.
Carney later said the Canadian government valued its ties with Beijing and would seek to “make up for lost time”.
On Tuesday, Wang described the meeting between Xi and Carney as “pivotal” and added that it marked the return of China-Canada relations “to the right track after seven years of twists and turns”, according to the Chinese foreign ministry statement.
The statement quoted Anand as saying that Ottawa was willing to deepen communication and boost mutual trust and understanding with Beijing, as well as achieve more mutually beneficial results including in trade.
Ties between China and Canada have long been strained, partly because of the 2018 tit-for-tat arrests of Huawei Technologies executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver at the request of the US, and two Canadians living in China accused of espionage.
Ottawa accused Beijing of “hostage diplomacy” during the geopolitical stand-off that only ended in 2021 when a deal with US prosecutors led to the release of Meng and the Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.
Tensions flared again in 2023 amid claims of Chinese interference in Canadian elections and attempts to intimidate lawmakers, culminating in the expulsion of a Chinese diplomat.
Trade has also proved a sticking point. Last year, former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau aligned with Washington in imposing 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. China retaliated by slapping duties on canola, pork and seafood.
Carney, who became prime minister in March, has voiced his government’s desire to improve ties with Beijing as his country navigates an increasingly complex relationship with the United States.
During his talks with Carney, Xi said China was willing to work with Canada to “bring China-Canada relations back onto the right track”.
The Canadian leader added that the two countries should view each other “correctly” and expand cooperation in fields ranging from trade to energy.
Days after the meeting, China reinstated group travel for its citizens to Canada, a move that Anand said marked an “important step in the recalibrated bilateral relationship”.
“Tourism plays an important role in fostering people-to-people ties, which are a foundation for broader mutual understanding and cooperation,” she said in a statement.
