China accused the US of lacking sincerity on trade talks on Tuesday as US President Donald Trump renewed tariff threats against Beijing.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the US to “show respect” if it wanted to engage in trade talks with Beijing. The comments came after Trump on Monday threatened to ratchet up tariffs on Chinese goods to over 100 per cent and terminate future trade talks if Beijing did not withdraw its retaliatory tariffs against Washington.
Trump’s reciprocal tariffs targeting almost all US trading partners, announced on Wednesday, have sent global markets into turmoil, with the Shanghai Composite Index experiencing its biggest one-day decline since the 2008 financial crisis.
China has been hardest hit with a 34 per cent tariff, which was added to existing duties of 20 per cent introduced over the past two months.
China quickly retaliated on Friday with a reciprocal 34 per cent tariff on all US imports to take effect on Thursday. It also imposed export controls on critical minerals and 16 American defence and tech companies.


Trump wrote on social media on Monday that if Beijing did not withdraw the 34 per cent tariffs by Tuesday, he would impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on China from Wednesday.
“Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!” he added.
Asked on Tuesday whether China and the US had communicated about their trade dispute, foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Washington’s actions did not “reflect its willingness to have a serious dialogue”.
“If the US really wants to talk, it should adopt an attitude of equality, respect and reciprocity,” he said.
“The Chinese people neither provoke trouble, nor are they afraid of it. Pressure, threats and blackmail are not the right way to deal with China.
“If the US disregards the interests of both countries and the international community and insists on launching a tariff war and a trade war, China will fight to the end,” Lin said.
He added that China would take “necessary measures” if Trump raised tariffs. He gave no sign that Beijing intended to withdraw existing tariffs or hold back future countermeasures.
On Monday, a commentary in the state-run People’s Daily said China would not shut the door to negotiations with the US. However, it added that Beijing would also not “take chances” and would make preparations to deal with the impact of US tariffs, including expanding domestic demand.
According to Bloomberg, Chinese policymakers met over the weekend to discuss whether to accelerate stimulus to boost domestic consumption.
Dozens of Chinese state funds have also announced plans to increase their share purchases in an effort to stabilise the market following a steep decline on Monday.
The Shanghai Composite Index closed up 1.58 per cent on Tuesday.
