Typhoon Dolphin made landfall at Yuhuan, a city in Zhejiang province, around 5.30pm on Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of 151km/h (94mph) near its centre, according to China’s National Meteorological Centre.
The typhoon is projected to move towards the west and northwest, gradually weakening.
Wang Hao, Communist Party secretary of Zhejiang province, stressed on Sunday morning that public safety was the top priority.
He urged strict precautions against mountain torrents, mudslides and other disasters that could be triggered by heavy rainfall, demanding the complete evacuation of anyone in harm’s way.
Wang also stressed that non-essential activities must be suspended. He called for strengthening emergency drainage and rescue operations to minimise the risk of urban waterlogging.


In the coming days, rain and wind will intensify across eastern China. Both Zhejiang and Shanghai are located within the typhoon’s “dangerous semicircle”, where wind and rain are expected to be at their strongest, according to Weather China on Sunday.
As of 2.20pm on Sunday, Shanghai’s two main airports had scrapped over 80 per cent of their daily flights – more than 2,230 cancellations in total – and more than 720 were called off for Monday.
Meanwhile, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport grounded over 500 flights on Sunday and pulled more than 180 scheduled for Monday, according to flight data provider VariFlight.
Several airports in Zhejiang province, including Ningbo Lishe and Wenzhou Longwan airports, had no flights arriving or departing on Sunday, VariFlight said.
Based on current forecasts, 44 airports are expected to be affected by the typhoon from Sunday to Wednesday. Airport operations in the cities of Nanjing, Hefei and Wuhan will also be disrupted starting on Monday, according to VariFlight.




Train services in the region have also been adjusted, with temporary suspensions placed on rail sections across Shanghai and the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Anhui and Jiangxi from Sunday to Monday.
Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying noted during a meeting on Friday that Dolphin was expected to be the strongest typhoon to hit China so far this year, China Water Resources News reported. The meeting was aimed at addressing potential typhoon-triggered flooding.
The typhoon is the fourth to make landfall in China since July 3. It is projected to bring 40 per cent more rainfall than last month’s Typhoon Bavi. Peak precipitation in the landfall zone could reach 800 to 900mm (31 to 35 inches) – far exceeding the threshold for a torrential downpour.
The storm is expected to move slowly as it moves inland, which could bring prolonged rainfall and heightened flood risks, according to China Water Resources News.
Typhoon Dolphin will continue moving north, passing through the Yangtze River, Lake Tai, Huai River, Yellow River and Hai River basins. The Ministry of Water Resources has already instructed local authorities to prepare reservoirs to manage incoming floodwaters, the report said.
There was already one possible tragedy before the storm reached land. On Friday, massive waves battered the coastal sea wall in Shitang, a town in Wenling, Zhejiang province, sweeping a nine-year-old boy into the sea as he walked with his family, according to news portal ThePaper.cn.

The search for the missing boy continued into Sunday, but local officials warned dangerous conditions were hampering the search, according to media reports.
Precautionary measures were under way ahead of the storm’s arrival. As of Saturday night, Fujian had evacuated 98,900 residents, suspended 55 coastal ferry routes and halted all coastal marine construction projects.
In Shanghai, all vessels at Yangshan Port were moved to safe waters by Friday evening, while the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan in Zhejiang closed its operations the same night.
