A father and his two daughters died after an Immigration Department truck allegedly ran a red light and triggered a series of crashes in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur early on Wednesday.
Preliminary investigations found that the empty truck, driven by a 43-year-old man, was headed to Chow Kit district at about 1am to pick up undocumented migrants detained in an operation, said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa.
Authorities believe the Isuzu Black Maria truck entered the intersection at Jalan Bukit Bintang with its beacon lights and siren activated while the traffic light was red. At the same time, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man was travelling straight through the intersection with the lights in his favour.
“The driver is believed to have been unable to avoid the truck, resulting in a collision in the middle of the intersection,” Mohd Zamzuri said.
The impact caused the truck to lose control and veer off course, striking the family of four, who were walking nearby, as well as an Inokom Matrix car that was stationary at the same intersection traffic lights.

The 53-year-old father and his daughters, aged 25 and 12, were killed at the scene. The 55-year-old mother, the sole survivor, sustained injuries to her head, right hand and both legs and was rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment.
All three drivers involved in the crash escaped unhurt.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his condolences and ordered the Immigration Department to carry out a thorough investigation into the accident.
“If there was any negligence or violation of the law, appropriate action must be taken without compromise,” Anwar said in a statement on social media.
Drivers detained
The drivers of the Immigration Department truck and the Proton Saga have been detained to assist investigations.
“Breathalyser tests for alcohol and preliminary urine screening tests were conducted on both drivers, with both tests returning negative results,” Mohd Zamzuri said.
Police have also obtained closed-circuit television footage of the incident and are seeking independent witnesses as part of their investigation. The vehicles involved have been seized for further inspection.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The Immigration Department said it was giving full cooperation to the police in its investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
It has launched an internal inquiry into compliance with standard operating procedures and safety requirements for operating the department’s vehicles.
“We view the incident seriously and will take appropriate action based on the findings of the authorities’ investigation as well as the department’s internal investigation,” director general Zakaria Shaaban said in a statement.
“The department respects the ongoing investigation and will not draw any conclusions that could pre-empt the authorities’ findings.”
