The Devil Wears Prada 2 is finally here, 20 years after the first film became a hit sensation. Introducing a new generation of fashion enthusiasts to the ever-changing industry, the new film – which retains much of the original cast – is sure to have many watchers guessing which parts are fact vs fiction.
Loosely inspired by the inner workings of Vogue and its long-time editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, The Devil Wears Prada was adapted from the novel of the same name. It marked author Lauren Weisberger’s debut and is semi-autobiographical: her first job after graduating (and travelling the world) was as Wintour’s personal assistant.
But without that 2003 novel there would be no Devil mania – so who is the real-life Andy Sachs?
She backpacked around the world after graduation

Born in March 1977 to a teacher mother and mortgage broker father in Scranton, Pennsylvania – made famous in the US version of comedy series The Office – Weisberger and her younger sister grew up in Allentown, in the same state.
After graduating with a degree in English literature from Cornell University in 1999, Weisberger backpacked through Europe, Egypt, Jordan, India, Nepal, Thailand and Hong Kong.
She worked under Anna Wintour for almost a year

Returning to the US following her backpacking expedition, Weisberger moved to Manhattan and took a job as an assistant to Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. Though Weisberger aspired to be a writer, her days in the office were filled with mundane tasks such as filing, sending faxes and fetching coffee, reported the Daily Mail. Yet in an interview on the Today show, she also described her time at Vogue as “crazy, exciting and hard”.
After 10 months at Vogue, Weisberger left for high-end travel magazine Departures, where she wrote short reviews and took creative writing classes at night.
The Devil Wears Prada: the books

As part of her coursework, Weisberger started writing about her experiences at Vogue. Her teacher shared the material with literary agent Deborah Schneider, who said, “If she wants to sell this book, I can sell it this afternoon.” The Devil Wears Prada was sold to publisher Doubleday in 2002 for a reported US$250,000, and was published the following year.

The novel was an enormous success, spending six months on The New York Times Best Sellers list. Since then, Weisberger has written seven more books, including two sequels to The Devil Wears Prada – Revenge Wears Prada (2013), which follows Andy; and When Life Gives You Lululemons (2018), about her colleague Emily, portrayed by Emily Blunt in the film in her breakout role.
The story proved so enduringly popular that it was turned into a musical, with music by Elton John. It premiered in Chicago in 2022 before making its West End debut in 2024, with Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams in the role of Miranda Priestly.
Who is Lauren Weisberger married to?

Weisberger is married to screenwriter Mike Cohen, who she met through a mutual friend and wed in 2008.
The couple, who previously lived in Connecticut with their two children, sold their home during the pandemic, and spent three years living abroad and home-schooling their kids. As of April 2026 the family was at sea, aboard a boat near the Bahamas.
What does she think of The Devil Wears Prada 2?

While Weisberger created the universe The Devil Wears Prada’s characters inhabit, she did not play a role in writing the screenplay for the sequel. That was the job of Aline Brosh McKenna, who also wrote the screenplay for the first film. Weisberger has, however, attended events on the press tour.
In a personal essay for Vogue ahead of the movie’s release, Weisberger wrote that she was experiencing “a kind of existential whiplash”, expressing surprise at how fascination over The Devil Wears Prada has endured over the years. “Something I wrote in my 20s is not only still relevant, but somehow trending again. The Devil Wears Prada hasn’t faded into a respectable backlist existence. It has persisted – quoted, memed, rebooted, reimagined, turned into a movie, a musical, and now a sequel – like a glamorous ghost that refuses to leave the building.”

Meanwhile, celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar – who works with clients such as Charlize Theron – has come out publicly to state for the record that she was the real-life inspiration behind Andy’s nemesis, Emily Charlton. On an episode of Vogue’s The Run-Through podcast, released last week, Fremar said the original novel was “mean” and “quite hurtful”, adding, “I remember feeling like it was a betrayal.”
That being said, Fremar is finally reclaiming her role in the book and film, telling Vogue: “There’s all this speculation – everyone really enjoyed the movie; Anna’s clearly embracing it. And so why not?” She’s reclaiming The Devil Wears Prada’s iconic quotes for herself, too. “I definitely told [Weisberger] a million girls would kill for the job,” Fremar said. “That was definitely my line ’cause I actually really believed that. And I knew that she didn’t necessarily want to be there.”
