Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov was eliminated in the first round at the 2026 US Open in New York following a defeat to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin.
While Tuesday’s match may have been disappointing for Dimitrov, the 35-year-old is one of Bulgaria’s top tennis players, and once reached a career high of No 3 in the ATP singles rankings.

His impressive professional tennis career aside, Dimitrov’s dating history is equally remarkable. From former tennis player Maria Sharapova to The Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger, Dimitrov has dated some of the biggest names in both the sporting and the entertainment world. He is currently in a relationship with Mexican actress and 3 Body Problem star Eiza Gonzalez.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Bulgarian tennis player and Eiza Gonzalez’s boyfriend.
He was born into a family of athletes

Dimitrov was born in 1991 to Dimitar Dimitrov and Maria Dimitrova. Dimitrov’s father is a tennis coach and his mother is a physical education teacher who formerly played volleyball.
It was Dimitrov’s father who first introduced the tennis player to the sport and coached him throughout his formative years. Dimitar quickly realised that not only did his son love tennis, but he also had a real talent for the game.
In a 2014 interview with the Financial Times, the father-son duo recalled Dimitrov spending day after day practising on the court in their hometown of Haskovo, Bulgaria.

“He [Dimitar] was a very strict man and throughout the summer we would be out there on the court at the hottest times of the day but I loved it. I was enjoying it so much and I think that’s what made us work so well together. We were pulling each other up and striving for greatness,” Dimitrov told the Financial Times.
A stellar tennis career

As his talent grew, Dimitrov left Bulgaria and joined an academy in Barcelona when he was only 13 years old. He soon rose through the ranks and won the boys’ singles title at Wimbledon in 2008, when he was 17.
His skills on the court earned him the moniker “Baby Federer” after Roger Federer, whose former coach Peter Lundgren remarked that Dimitrov’s abilities were better than the Swiss legend’s at the same age.
Dimitrov went on to defeat the likes of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in matches and was ranked world No 3 in 2017. He remains the most successful tennis player from Bulgaria.
His dating history

Dimitrov and Eiza Gonzalez confirmed their relationship via Instagram in 2025, and have since made a few high-profile appearances together.
Before Gonzalez, Dimitrov was known to be in a relationship with supermodel and actress Mădălina Ghenea. Dimitrov dated Nicole Scherzinger from 2015 to 2019 and Maria Sharapova from 2012 to 2015. He was also briefly rumoured to be dating Serena Williams in 2012.
