Suzy Menkes is one of fashion media’s most prolific journalists. The British fashion critic began her career at The Times and served as the editor of Vogue International for several years before stepping down in 2020.
At 82, Menkes remains active in fashion journalism, making regular appearances at runway shows during fashion weeks worldwide.

Outside her illustrious career, Menkes is a mother to three sons and a grandmother to six grandchildren – three granddaughters and three grandsons.
Of all her grandchildren, Menkes regularly highlights Claudia Spanier, who works as a DJ, on her Instagram.

What is Claudia Spanier’s background?

Claudia Spanier is the daughter of Gideon Spanier, the son of Suzy Menkes and her late husband David Spanier.
Like his mother, Gideon works in media as an editor. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has worked at publications such as The Times and currently serves as the UK editor-in-chief at Campaign, a business magazine.
Claudia graduated from Hampstead Fine Arts College in London in 2023, where she completed her A-levels in media studies and graphic design.
Instead of following in the footsteps of her father and grandmother, Claudia chose to pursue music and now works as a DJ under the moniker “Cloud9”.
Where has Claudia Spanier performed?

In a 2025 interview with Shift London, Claudia revealed that she discovered her love for DJing after her best friend’s mother, who is a DJ, introduced her to the equipment and let her practise on her decks.
“I really like being a DJ. It’s fun to control a room and kind of dictate a night and be in charge of the vibe. That’s one of my favourite things,” she told Shift London.
While Claudia originally picked up DJing as a hobby, she quickly fell in love with it and hasn’t looked back since buying her own decks. According to her LinkedIn profile, Claudia works as a freelance DJ, primarily playing Afrobeats, amapiano, funky house and R&B. She has performed at events for major brands including Asics and Adidas, as well as private gigs at Soho House.

On July 31, Menkes showed off her granddaughter’s DJing skills in an Instagram post, writing: “Proud Granny moment watching my Granddaughter Claudia DJ for the Charlotte Tilbury Covent Garden ultimate summer glow pop-up!”
