The third season of Taylor Sheridan’s espionage thriller Lioness aired on Paramount+ on August 2, with an impressive cast including Zoe Saldaña, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman and Michael Kelly.

The show follows Saldaña’s Joe McNamara, a CIA officer leading an undercover programme that enlists female operatives to carry out dangerous missions. A constant presence by her side is her surgeon husband, Neal McNamara, played by Dave Annable. “I think he’s got a beautiful story,” Annable told TV Insider last week. “And it’s an important story to play a family member of these service members. It’s a real gift.”
So who is the 46-year-old actor Dave Annable? Here is everything you need to know.
What is Dave Annable’s background?

David Rodman Annable was born September 15, 1979, in Suffern, New York. He was raised by a Jewish mother and a father of English, German, Irish and French descent. Annable attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, where he joined the student-run station, Plattsburgh State Television. The actor said in 2009 that he had an “amazing” experience with the station before going into the “real world”, per Cardinal Points, the university’s newspaper.
Annable dropped out one semester before his graduation, much to his mother’s disappointment, to move to New York City to pursue his acting career. There, he studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. The actor had promised his mother he would return to complete his degree at some point, which he finally did in 2009, after taking distance-learning classes.
What roles has Dave Annable played?

Annable made his on-screen debut in an episode of NBC’s Third Watch in 2002, and landed a role as a lead in the ABC drama series Brothers & Sisters in 2006. He also starred in the supernatural drama 666 Park Avenue, and was part of the main cast of two medical dramas, Red Band Society and Heartbeat, though both shows were cancelled after one season. He has also appeared in films including Little Black Book (2004), You May Not Kiss the Bride (2011) and What’s Your Number (2011).
In 2017, Annable joined the original cast of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone as Lee Dutton. Although his character dies in the pilot episode, he appears in two more episodes in flashback scenes. Annable had hoped to work with Sheridan again, and his opportunity came when Sheridan created Lioness, which first aired in 2023.
“I was praying because I’m such a fan of his work, and it was also this beautifully awful thing to be killed off in the first episode of Yellowstone, which I knew, but I had no idea how much fun I’d have playing a cowboy,” Annable told TV Insider. “[T]here’s no greater compliment for an actor to have somebody like Taylor call you and ask to work with you again.”
Who is Dave Annable married to?

Annable met actress Odette Yustman on Brothers & Sisters, where she played his love interest in the final season. The pair married in 2010 and welcomed their first daughter, Charlie Mae, in September 2015. In 2019, after nine years of marriage, the couple announced their separation. Despite this, the couple spent time together during the Covid-19 lockdown, and by August 2020, they confirmed they were getting back together.
In 2021, Yustman shared that she had experienced her third miscarriage. Fortunately, in October 2022, the couple welcomed their second daughter, Andersen “Andi” Lee. The actor often shares snaps of his family spending time together on social media.
After experiencing the ups and downs in their marriage, Annable and Yustman have learned that “communication is everything”, the actress told US Weekly in June. “We’re still figuring it out, but honestly, now we have a toolbox that we can pull from through years and years of therapy. It’s hard work every single day, but it’s so worth it.” Annable added that such hard work must be shared: “You both have to mirror each other’s effort into working on it. You can’t have one person want to work and the other not.”
