“I sound like I’m on helium,” actress Katie Leung tells Style with a laugh during a recent interview at Hong Kong’s inaugural Comic Con, which took place from May 29 to 31.
She’s referring not to the current state of her voice – which must surely be exhausted after a long day spent saying hello to fans from all over – but rather her breakout performance in the original Harry Potter movies 20 years ago. Leung played Cho Chang, the titular character’s romantic interest and classmate at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“Every time I watch the Harry Potter movies I’m like, ‘Wow, my voice was really high-pitched,’” she says. “I haven’t quite gotten used to it.”

Leung has certainly come a long way since, nailing a high-profile role as the villainous noblewoman, Lady Araminta Gun, in season four of the hugely popular Netflix series Bridgerton earlier this year. And, as long-time fans of the actress know, her recent appearance at Hong Kong Comic Con marks a full-circle moment for her, too; Leung was born in Scotland to parents from Hong Kong, and her Cantonese heritage has played a huge role in shaping her love for movies over the years.
For Leung, Hong Kong Comic Con was a homecoming. She wasn’t shy about her admiration for Hong Kong actors like her childhood crush Louis Koo, also present at the festival, as well as Faye Wong and Tony Leung. The actress previously shared in interviews that Maggie Cheung’s performance in In the Mood for Love inspired her portrayal of Bridgerton’s Araminta, and that she would love to star in a Wong Kar-wai film herself someday. In one other recent conversation with the South China Morning Post, she said that TVB dramas like A Kindred Spirit helped her stay connected to her heritage growing up.

But Leung wasn’t always so comfortable about being such a visible role model to millions of Asian diaspora kids worldwide. The actress was famously thrust into the spotlight after auditioning for Harry Potter on a whim as a shy 16-year-old. She certainly didn’t think she would actually land the role, previously telling the SCMP, “I thought I was a s*** actor.” She took a break from acting and had to take time to rebuild her confidence. That’s all a far cry from her defiant, scene-stealing turn in Bridgerton, starring as the matriarch of the show’s first East Asian family.
“The irony is, when I first got the role of Cho Chang, I felt this immense pressure to represent,” Leung tells Style. “It’s a question I was constantly asked. I was just overwhelmed because I was still trying to figure out who I was. Meanwhile, people were looking to me for inspiration. The more pressure I put on myself, the further away I got from who I was.”

“Now I’ve let go of that pressure because I’m more self-assured, going through ups and downs, not believing in myself and all those things life throws at you. I’m finally getting to a place where I’m more at peace with who I am,” says Leung.
The actress spent a large part of the Bridgerton global press tour speaking openly about how much the industry has changed since her acting debut two decades ago, while continuing to advocate for even greater diversity in on-screen representation. “The more I do that, the more authentic I can be, the more I can be there for people and be a good role model. Because I’m not trying to be anything else,” she explains.
Leung, who calls this latest chapter of her career a “liberating one”, adds that she’s found renewed pride in being an actor of Asian descent. “I can’t say I was that [proud] growing up,” she admits. “Obviously being a minority in the UK, you just want to fit in and you feel you’re an outcast. Now, I’m so proud and I want to speak more Cantonese, be with my people and get to know the culture more. Just be very transparent about the foods and the films I enjoy. If I keep doing that, people will feel like they can be themselves more.”

One other thing seems to have changed Leung’s perspective on her career thus far: motherhood. While she says she’ll eventually be happy to rewatch the Harry Potter movies with her young son, for now she seems perfectly content maintaining a boundary between her personal and professional lives.
“I don’t think it’s something I feel comfortable about watching [with him] yet,” she says. “He’s seen me on TV a couple times, and he gets a bit confused. Whenever we’re together I’m not in make-up, I’m not dressed up, and when he sees me on TV I’m someone completely different. He’s a bit too young now to understand what acting is.”
