We’re still months away from spooky season, but horror films are trending early. Following the viral popularity of indie horror movie Obsession by YouTuber-turned-director Curry Barker, the internet has turned its attention to A24’s latest release, Backrooms.

Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, yet another YouTuber, the psychological thriller stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, a furniture salesman, who finds himself walking through a portal into an unsettling dimension – the “Backrooms” – of endless bare office rooms with fluorescent lights and eerie hallways. The film has already broken records, earning US$118 million worldwide and US$81.4 million in the US – making Parsons the youngest director to nab No 1 at the domestic box office. He’s also A24’s youngest filmmaker ever, per Deadline.
The film’s premise was inspired by Parsons’s viral YouTube miniseries, which was further inspired by a 2019 4Chan post about a fictional empty office space with yellow wallpaper and fluorescent lighting. “If you’re not careful and you noclip [glitch] out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you,” the post read.

As if that isn’t eerie enough, Ejifor’s Clark is not alone in the Backrooms. He is accompanied by a monster who resembles an obscure, distorted version of himself played by actor Robert Bobroczkyi.

Robert Bobroczkyi is Romanian

Bobroczkyi was born in July 2000 in Arad, Romania. Standing at 7ft 7 inches (2.31 metres) by age 17, Bobroczkyi easily towers over most of NBA’s finest players – and the up-and-coming actor does actually have basketball roots. His father is Hungarian-born Romanian basketball player, Zsigmond Bobróczky.
Robert himself attended Spire Academy, a boarding school for elite athletes, in Geneva, Ohio. He also played for Stella Azzurra, a basketball academy in Rome, and in the US before turning to Hollywood.
How has Robert Bobroczkyi’s height affected his life?

Because of his tall stature, the 25-year-old has spent most of his life being studied by doctors, especially after the young basketballer started developing pain in his knees as he grew. At just eight years old, Bobroczkyi was already standing at 6ft 2 inches. While serious illnesses such as gigantism and Marfan syndrome were ruled out by doctors, Bobroczkyi suffers from scoliosis, which affects his spine.
“At the beginning, I just tried to ignore it. But then as I grew up a bit and got more mature, I realised that just ignoring it is not necessarily the right solution. You have to be smart about it,” Bobroczkyi told The Washington Post in 2018. “Not everyone is necessarily polite, and some people have never seen such a tall person before, so it’s a normal reaction. Now I try to be more accepting and just smile.”

Bobroczkyi made his acting debut in the 2024 film Alien: Romulus, where he played the terrifying hybrid “offspring” creature towards the end of the film. Backrooms is only his second acting credit – but he may be well on his way to becoming a memorable creature actor.
