Hong Kong-based photographer, artist and director Wing Shya is best known for his collaborations with famed director Wong Kar-wai on iconic films such as In the Mood for Love. He is also a regular contributor to fashion and art magazines like i-D, Vogue Italia and Numèro.
How do you define style?
It’s a look, just like the sky is blue.
What is the most memorable fashion event you’ve been to?

An exhibition curated by William Chang called “The Love of Couture”. His vision was all about contrasting colours that really stood out.
How has the concept of style evolved in Hong Kong over the past two decades?

I witnessed the bygone days of the Trade Development Council, when there were many up-and-coming designers like Barney Cheng or Vivienne Tam. Now we have brands like Yat Pit, so you can see how people preferred more luxurious styles in the past compared to now.
Who are your top local style icons?

In the past, Vivienne Tam and Joyce Ma changed the landscape with their incredible vision. Yat Pit for the present, and for the future – who knows? Whoever it is, they need to genuinely embody Hong Kong.
What’s the most memorable fashion shoot you’ve done in Hong Kong?

It was my first shoot for i-D magazine featuring the likes of Daniel Wu and Shu Qi. I was worried as it was the first time my work would be showcased to a global audience. It opened a door for me to explore Hong Kong more deeply and widely, even though it’s a city I grew up in. It was an amazing experience and I could sense my personal growth in my photographic style.
How has fashion photography changed?

In the past it was all about fashion items, but now we focus more on attitude. I’m really excited about the work of Chinese photographers like Leslie Zhang.
