Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters continues to break records every day. It has become the most-watched film on the platform, with 236 million views at the time of writing, and has four songs within the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 (with “Golden” being No 1).

The film centres around the K-pop girl group Huntr/x, whose three members balance their careers in the spotlight with dramatic battles against demons. Confronted with their rivals, the Saja Boys, the girls rely on the power of music and friendship to protect the world.
Behind the fierce pink-haired character of Mira is Korean-American actress May Hong, 36, who was pleasantly surprised by the film’s massive success. “I expected [the movie] to be really awesome and fun, but I did not expect it to be at the level that it is at right now,” she told Deadline. “I didn’t think it would be a complete phenomenon, a global sensation, or top of the charts.”
A model, actress and artist, Hong has previously appeared in the movie Adam (2019) and the TV series Tales of the City (2019) and Hacks (2022).

Mira is May Hong’s first voice acting role

Hong auditioned for the part of Mira three years ago, but she didn’t start recording for the character until this February, according to Yahoo! Entertainment. Though new to voice work, Hong delivered an impressive performance in KPop Demon Hunters.
Her favourite experience? Screaming, per Mashable. “It really is a full expression – it’s my first voice-over role, and it was cathartic to just scream,” she continued, per AllKpop. “I was even snacking during the food scenes! It feels good to be able to yell and not think about my body – it kind of disappears.”
She’s a queer actress

Of the 10 credits listed on her IMDB page, Hong’s most well-known character may be that of Margot Park in TV show Tales of the City – a lesbian who navigates love and identity as her partner transitions. The role ultimately proved transformative for Hong, helping her embrace her own queer identity. “Weirdly, being part of Tales allowed me to give myself permission to be queer,” she told Into the Gloss.
Hong has also spoken candidly about the importance of Korean-American representation in media. For her, playing a character who existed simply as herself, with no extra attention placed on her ethnicity, was a powerful experience.
In an interview with NextShark, Hong said, “The way I feel about media visibility for people of colour is that we’re no longer trying to crowd into the same tiny mouse hole – rather that we all open doors for each other, each time multiplying the number of doors in each room we enter.”
She’s a model

Hong is no stranger to the spotlight. She has walked in every single show for Eckhaus Latta, a fashion label founded by her friends, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta. Hong had been working as a studio manager and digital technician for a photographer when the duo scouted her, notes Into the Gloss.
She has since walked for brands like Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Adidas, per Gulf News, as well as for Telfar’s 20th anniversary runway show.
She is an artist

Hong moved to the US from South Korea when she was just six years old. With a strong passion for creative expression, she attended the famed LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
“Going to LaGuardia was a saving grace. You have to make a portfolio to get in. A 12-year-old making a ‘body of work’ is hilarious to me, but it’s also amazing,” she told Into The Gloss.
Finding printmaking particularly interesting, Hong went on to study the medium at the Rhode Island School of Design, adds Yahoo! Entertainment. Today, she often shares her artwork on social media and even takes on commissioned pieces.
