Kacy Hill is known for many things: her genre-defying music spanning pop, country and folk, her early-career collaboration with Travis Scott, and most recently, the jab she made at her ex, Jim-E Stack, on TikTok.

In the video, Hill used Lorde’s “Man of the Year” as the soundtrack to poke fun at how her ex broke up with her during his work on the production of Lorde’s new album Virgin, then proceeded to date the singer. Hill didn’t name anyone, but fans quickly connected the dots to producer Jim-E Stack, Hill’s former partner of six and a half years.
In a follow-up video, she clarified that she just wanted to laugh at what happened in the past and that she was in a loving relationship now.

She was featured on Travis Scott’s ‘90210’

Many might remember Hill from her feature on one of Travis Scott’s most famous songs, “90210”, which ushered her into the spotlight. Although her music isn’t quite influenced by hip-hop and rap, she says she still admires the genre and its artists.
“Something that I really admire about hip-hop and rap is they’re very experimental with song structure and production over the last, I don’t know, 20 years, especially,” she told Slug Mag. “I’ve learned so much from those rooms and from those artists in there, risk-taking and questioning how songs are structured and how songs are made.”
However, Hill has made it clear – especially through TikTok – that she doesn’t identify with that period of her life any more. Addressing the fans who insist she is inseparable from “90210” and should reunite with Scott, she emphasised that she has moved on.
She was a model who toured with Kanye West

Hill found herself working with Scott after signing with Kanye West’s label, G.O.O.D. Music, in 2015. Before that, Hill modelled for American Apparel – a gig she landed just a month after moving to LA from her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Through the job, she was cast as one of the three amateur dancers for West’s Yeezus tour.
While on tour, she uploaded her song “Experience” to YouTube. According to the Sorry We’re Cyrus podcast, the video made its way from her hairdresser to West’s barber and West himself. When Hill decided to leave the tour after its first leg to pursue music, West offered a deal with his label.

In 2019, Hill parted ways with the label and began releasing music independently. Currently, she is signed to Nettwerk, an independent label.
Her childhood nickname inspired her album

The inspiration for Hill’s 2024 studio album comes from her childhood nickname: Bug. In an interview with Nylon, she shared that as a kid, she loved bugs and would spend her time digging in the dirt for worms. The fascination with the earth never left her – today, the 31-year-old artist loves her garden and has even launched a brand of bug-inspired apparel, Bug World.
Surrounded by successful musicians from the beginning of her career, Hill says she felt pressure to make a name for herself quickly. Gardening offered her a new perspective. She realised that success, like growth, relies on many factors that are out of her control.

“When you stick a seed in the ground, there’s a very good chance you will get nothing from it. But when you do get something, it’s so beautiful and exciting and you feel really grateful for it,” she told Nylon. “I was like, ‘That’s how I need to think of any creative endeavour’. It’s enjoying whatever I can get from this, while I can get it.”
She turned her heartbreak into music

Hill wrote Bug before the end of her long-term relationship with Stack, unaware of how her emotions were surfacing in her music. Speaking to Nylon, Hill said, “It’s funny looking back now because I’m like, ‘Wow, I didn’t know I was feeling all these things.’ Now that it’s over, yeah, it’s sad.”
In an interview with Tmrw Magazine, Hill said the songs in her new EP, “But Anyway, No Worries”, releasing next month, reflect her journey of rediscovery as she navigates her thirties after a major break-up.
