Abby Elliott plays perhaps the most empathetic character in FX’s critically acclaimed series The Bear: Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, the calm, sweet sister of troubled chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) who tries to hold the family together.

Sugar’s role as the emotional glue of the Berzattos is important not just in the present-day restaurant but also in flashback scenes, where she supports Carmy long before he attempts salvaging his late brother’s failing business in season one.
Elliott’s experience with comedy – and she does consider The Bear comedy, despite the controversy over its categorisation as one at the Emmys – goes a long way back.
Here’s what to know about the 2024 Golden Globe nominee, Abby Elliott.
Comedy runs in the Elliott family

Born in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the actress grew up surrounded by comedy icons. Her dad, Chris Elliott, starred on Saturday Night Live’s 20th season from 1994 to 1995, and is also known for his role as Roland Schitt in Schitt’s Creek, where he often appeared alongside Eugene Levy.
“My dad, he’s my hero. He’s childlike in a way. We always had fun with him,” Elliott said in a conversation with Jamie Lee Curtis in Interview Magazine. “He dissuaded us, if anything, from going into the business until I was 18. Then he was like, ‘You can do whatever you want. I know you’re going to do this anyway.’”
Comedy runs deep in the Elliott bloodline. Her grandfather, Bob Elliott, was also a comedian famous for being one-half of the duo Bob and Ray. SNL writer Steve Higgins is married to Elliott’s aunt, and his son, John Higgins, has also appeared on the sketch show.
She is married to screenwriter and producer Bill Kennedy

Elliott’s husband, Bill Kennedy, is a Primetime Emmy Award-nominated screenwriter and producer known for working on shows like House of Cards, The Morning Show and American Odyssey.
The two met in 2014 on the set of the film Sex Ed, written by Kennedy and starring Elliott. But the couple’s romance only started a year later, when Kennedy called his then future wife to review a scene, per Elle. The meeting quickly turned into a date, and the two tied the knot shortly after, in 2016. They have welcomed two children since, and are often seen attending events side by side.
She was fired from SNL

Elliott joined SNL in 2008 at just 21 years old as the youngest ever female cast member to date. During her four-season run, she was known for her impressions of A-listers like Rachel Maddow, Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie and Meryl Streep.
“Every week was a new week, and your happiness would depend on whether you got something on air or not, and if three weeks went by without a sketch, you’d think, ‘Uh-oh, am I going to be fired?’” Elliott recalled of the intense pressure behind the SNL stage in The Independent. “There was always that looming threat of getting fired. That was the worst that could happen. And then, I kind of did.”
At first, Elliott had asked to leave. When she changed her mind, she approached creator and producer Lorne Michaels – only to be turned down. “I went back to him with my tail between my legs asking to stay, but after that season, Lorne said, ‘No, I’m going to cut you loose,’” Elliott said in the same interview.

But the exit was clearly not the “worst thing” that happened to her, though: Elliott proceeded to land roles in How I Met Your Mother, the Bravo comedy Odd Mom Out, and the series Indebted.
She shadowed a restaurant manager to prepare for The Bear

Perhaps Sugar’s role feels especially personal because Elliott’s real-life pregnancy was written into the show, which ended up being an emotionally charged addition to Sugar’s storyline.
But working at a restaurant? That is one area where Elliott has minimum first-hand experience. Her brief stint as a restaurant hostess ended in a week – she did not even return for her pay cheque, per Today.com. Later, to prepare for her role in The Bear managing the chaotic restaurant, Elliott spent a night shadowing a restaurant manager at a Pasadena, California, location of Houston’s.
