The annual Hong Kong Film Awards – possibly the city’s most stellar event – offers the guaranteed sight of celebrities dressed to the nines on the red carpet. 
In previous years, stars have often played it safe in floor-grazing, elegant gowns at the ceremony – dubbed Hong Kong’s version of the Oscars – which celebrates the best professionals, from actors and actresses to producers, writers, and directors, in the Chinese film industry.

Yet, at Sunday’s 37th edition of the event, the red carpet saw a refreshing change, with many celebrities opting for extravagant floral prints to steal the spotlight.

Best actress nominees Stephy Tang and Chrissie Chau turned out in feminine gowns with elaborate floral embellishments. 
Six things you didn’t know about the Hong Kong Film Awards

Stephy Tang wore a pink Valentino gown from the spring/summer 2018 collection, matched with Bulgari floral jewellery and Giuseppe Zanotti platform heels. 

Cherry Ngan wore a pale pink floral dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti Eliza plexi-and-blue-suede sandals with crystals. 

Kearen Pang wore Blumarine’s anemone-print maxi dress from the spring-summer 2018 collection matched with clogs in silver patent leather from Giuseppe Zanotti. 

Singer-actress Fiona Sit wore a daring cropped floral top matched with Bulgari high jewellery for her appearance on the red carpet. 

Young actress Stephanie Au dolled up in an elegant white Andrew Gn gown with delicate gold embellishments.

Elegant minimalistic style is also a red-carpet favourite. 
We are in love with Zhao Wei’s red Valentino asymmetrical dress, as well as Charlene Choi’s refreshing pink and yellow colour combination. 



Best actress winner Teresa Mo wore an elegant bejewelled Giorgio Armani gown on the red carpet. 

Tang later changed into a minimalistic Stella McCartney gown after making her red-carpet appearance.  
Classic dandies

The actors mainly played it safe and went for classic tuxedos for the soiree. 
Some of the stylish gentlemen, however, spiced up their looks by wearing bejewelled shoes – cue Ronald Cheng’s Giuseppe Zanotti velvet loafers. 

Simon Yam and best actor Louis Koo paired the classic regular-fit suit with a plain bow tie. 
But best supporting actress nominee Fish Liew also nailed this look by showing off a mix of both masculine and feminine style.

Yam wore his classic navy suit with a brooch that is similar in design to the Hong Kong Film Awards statuette. 
He also wore an exquisite Bulgari watch from the Daniel Roth Il Giocatore Veneziano collection. 

Best actor winner Koo looked elegant in a navy classic tuxedo from Dior at the ceremony. 
The Best actor nominee Andy Lau wore a stylish tuxedo from Tom Ford featuring grosgrain peak lapels and centre vent – displaying the same sophisticated style and unmistakable elan as the designer’s creations for Daniel Craig as spy James Bond in the long-running action film franchise.
