April, as usual, proves to be a bumper month for the watch community. All eyes were on Geneva as the watch world looked out for huge new releases from brands exhibiting at Watches and Wonders, while independent brands Rexhep Rexhepi, Fleming and even Universal Genève made splashes outside the main fair this month.
Timothée Chalamet takes his relationship with Urban Jürgensen to the next level, while early May saw other stars descend on the Met Gala with wearable art on their wrists as well as outfits.
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, however, as independent watchmaker Romain Gauthier encountered arguably a watch owner’s worst nightmare. Read on to find out more.
Watches and Wonders returns

All eyes were on Geneva in April as the world’s timepiece collectors and retailers, watchmakers, and horological enthusiasts waited with bated breath to see what would be released from the 66 brands exhibiting at Watches and Wonders at the Palexpo convention centre.
The Style team was on the ground at the fair, where brands like Audemars Piguet brought new releases and collaborations that reimagined the ways a watch can be worn or operated, alongside yet more gem-set pieces that pushed the boundaries of watchmaking craftsmanship.
Independents go wild with new releases

Outside Watches and Wonders, independent houses shone with releases in April. Mathieu Cleguer launched Cleguer Horology with the 38.5mm titanium Inspiration One Souscription, containing a movement with a proprietary innate escapement, which derives elements from natural and Fasoldt escapements to increase accuracy and efficiency.

Rexhep Rexhepi released the Chronograph Flyback, a first-ever release of the complication for the brand, coming in at 38.8mm in diameter and under 10mm in thickness. The subdials are laid out in a striking position at 12, four and eight o’clock, showing chronograph functions underneath.

Just over two years after its acquisition by Breitling in December 2023, Universal Genève relaunched – not with a single piece or collection, but an immediate full range of products. In addition to new production variations of the brand’s legendary Polerouter, an early design by Gérald Genta, Universal Genève unveiled gemset Couture creations and the Compax chronograph.

US-based Fleming finally gives us a long-awaited follow-up to its vintage-inspired Series 1 Mark I with the Mark II. The new version, available in tantalum or 18k rose gold, features a more modern sector dial design and the Calibre FM.02, which uses two barrels to offer seven days of power reserve.
Wrist candy at the Met Gala

Watches and Wonders wasn’t the only annual to-do with a host of high horology moments. On May 4 in New York, stars took to the red carpet ahead of the Met Gala to interpret the dress code Fashion Is Art, a nod to the “Costume Art” exhibition on display. Alongside the stunning fashion looks were some exceptional examples of wrist art. Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie, for instance, accentuated his halter-neck look with the Omega Constellation Observatory 39.4 mm in gold with a gold bracelet.
Rami Malek and Paul Anthony Kelly also chose pieces that accented their looks, with Malek’s platinum vintage Cartier Crash featuring black hands on black indices to match a black Saint Laurent look. Kelly’s burgundy tailcoat was set off nicely by a Vacheron Constantin Overseas tourbillon in titanium with a red dial.

Veering further into vintage territory, Colman Domingo completed a colourful outfit with a vintage Omega Constellation integrated bracelet with very subtle two-toned accents.

Mark Zuckerberg made his watch the main art piece in his ensemble, opting for a George Daniels Anniversary model – one of only a few examples from the pioneering English watchmaker.
Timothée Chalamet joins Urban Jürgensen

The Marty Supreme actor goes from collector to creative adviser, as Urban Jürgensen and the Rosenfield family announced in April that Timothée Chalamet had bought a minority stake in the brand.
Less than a year ago, the Rosenfields and then co-CEO Kari Voutilainen – who stepped down from his role in January – relaunched the brand first known in the 19th century for producing marine chronometers for the Danish navy. Months later, during the promotion of Marty Supreme, Chalamet was spotted wearing an Urban Jürgensen UJ-2 – a watch he’s frequently been seen in public with since.
The Romain Gauthier watch theft

In the last week of April, esteemed independent Swiss watchmaker Romain Gauthier was on a flight to Hong Kong when a unique Romain Gauthier Logical One Secret was stolen from his business class cabin. The piece is known for its high level of engraving and finishing on the enamel cover, as well as a constant force movement developed by Gauthier himself.
According to a global alert by retailer Swiss Prestige, who carry Gauthier’s watches, the watch was seen in the possession of dealers in mainland China within 24 hours of the incident. The retailer encouraged members of the watch community to be alert and not engage in any transactions involving the stolen watch.

WatchProfessor, an online watchmaking education platform founded by industry veteran Carson Chan, provided a fuller story based on his personal correspondence with Gauthier. The watch was placed in a bag with a three-digit combination lock and secured overhead, but during deplaning, Gauthier passed by a passenger who kicked up a commotion over having euros stolen from their own three-digit combination bag.
On checking his own bag, Gauthier found that the Logical One Secret was missing. Chan further confirmed to Style that, as of May 6, Gauthier reported the missing piece to the authorities, but has not recovered it yet. WatchProfessor went on to encourage watch community members to be vigilant when travelling with watches, ensuring they take all precautions when something of value is on the line.
