Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been quietly undergoing an image revamp. Recently, he’s ditched the grey T-shirts and nerdy hoodies for shearling jackets – and even a gilded suit for last year’s glitzy Ambani wedding.
As part of his transformation, he appears to be flaunting his billions on his wrist as he displays a growing passion for traditional, analogue complication watches. In fact, he was spotted “geeking out” over Anant Ambani’s US$1 million-plus Richard Mille timepiece during the festivities.
Zuckerberg himself was seen wearing an extremely rare Greubel Forsey watch, which retails for about US$906,000, when he announced the decision to ditch third-party fact-checking on Meta’s social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram and allow more political content.

Greubel Forsey’s tourbillon watch, the Hand Made 1, is an exquisite example of Swiss craftsmanship. As the name suggests, it is made by hand and takes 6,000 hours of labour (the equivalent of three years’ work) to create. About 95 per cent of the components are produced using hand-operated tools, including the balance spring, dial and screws. The model features a unique gratté main mainplate, while the partly open dial is hand enamelled.

The watch is the latest taste of the tech billionaire’s eye-wateringly expensive watch collection, which includes at least three Patek Philippes, three F.P. Journe timepieces, an H. Moser & CIE Streamliner Tourbillon Skeleton, Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra Mark II and a Jaeger-LeCoultre.
As he stated recently, “watches are cool”. With his new Hand Made 1, Zuckerberg joins an exclusive club of owners. Since the timepiece’s 2019 launch, just two or three have been made each year. That means only about 15 examples exist – and the company has confirmed just one of these masterpieces will be made this year.

Greubel Forsey is now launching the Hand Made 2, the successor to its coveted timepiece. The new model, priced at roughly US$685,000, has different architecture and features a handcrafted jewel for the power reserve indicator. It will also be restricted to two or three pieces a year.
Greubel Forsey was founded by French watchmaker Robert Greubel and English restoration expert Stephen Forsey, who met in the early 1990s. In 2004, the pair unveiled the Double Tourbillon 30°, a watch they built together and wrote a new chapter in watchmaking.
They look at innovation and the improvement of performance, convinced there is still much to invent. With Greubel focused on design and creation and Forsey excelling in the more technical areas, their brand has become one of the most lauded names in high-end, independent horology.
In 2023 the co-founders bought back the 20 per cent of Greubel Forsey’s shares that had been sold to Richemont in 2006, allowing the business to be restructured and refined for its next chapter.
“The brand is now entirely independent,” says CEO Michel Nydegger. “While we maintained operational independence even during Richemont’s involvement, this complete freedom allows us to truly write our own destiny. Without it, a project like Hand Made [1 and] 2 – highly impractical on paper, but essential to our values – would never have been possible.”

Greubel Forsey is proud to be a niche luxury brand. Invention and innovation are at the heart of every piece it produces, combining hand-finishing and advanced watchmaking, both of which are time-consuming processes. The Hand Made 1 and 2, along with five other models, such as the Tourbillon Cardan, Nano Foudroyante EWT and Grande Sonnerie, are all of limited production, making these watches rare.
From 260 pieces made in 2023, the brand has now capped production in 2025 to just 200, says Nydegger, “to maintain our uncompromising quality and further elevate our standards in hand finishes, which remains our main production restraint”.
Client relationships are paramount, Nydegger adds and when it came to Zuckerberg he told Bloomberg: “It’s a pleasure to see someone who has played such a pivotal role in shaping the modern digital landscape and lifestyle show true appreciation of fine watchmaking today.”
