Thai-born jewellery designer Sophie Schuemers-Rogers, founder of fine jewellery brand Pacharee, knows Bangkok better than anyone. And the spirit of Thailand runs deep in her designs: she recently launched another jewellery brand, Khong, which incorporates Thai spiritual symbols and scripts across several of its signature pieces.
Though she splits her time between Bangkok and Zurich, where Pacharee also has an atelier, Schuemers-Rogers will always call the Thai capital home – and she has many reasons why. Below, the designer shares her favourite places in the city to eat, drink, shop, work out and hang out.
What’s the best and worst thing about living in Bangkok?

Best things: the magical sunrise, hectic energy, amazing food, surprises along the way – and the magical sunset. It’s a city full of contrasts that constantly excites. It’s my happy place. The worst thing? I will state the obvious: the traffic jams [that can mean it] takes forever to get to places.
What are your favourite restaurants in the city?

Charmkrung, Charmkok, 100 Mahaseth. Appia [Trattoria] and Chenin for international cuisine.
Where do you like to go for a drink?

Nana Street in Chinatown – there are so many fun bars you can bar hop around, from the XXG [Xin Xe Goi] rooftop, to anything you see on the street. Just try! That’s the fun of it. I also love Alonetogether jazz bar – you can easily fall in love there.
Where do you go to shop in the city?

We are a shopping mall culture – Emquartier, Emporium, Dusit Central Park are my go-tos, but I also love local brands around Talat Noi, like Tudi Eyewear and just random shops around there. I shop online for local brands. Favourite ones include Janesuda, Fah Chak Wo+Man, ÁMR [de Saíson] and Cservice.
What hotels would you recommend in Bangkok?

Dusit Thani is my new favourite. It’s sleek and beautiful, and I love a huge window with skyscraper views.
What souvenirs do you recommend?

Poy-Sian menthol inhalers. And Pacharee jewellery from our showrooms, of course!
What are your wellness hotspots in Bangkok?

I’m not a spa person, strangely. I’m big on the Lagree Method – I go to Carve House. It’s a beautiful studio and amazing workout – tough but effective.
What does your ideal day in Bangkok look like?

Starting my day at Sarnies in Charoenkrung – it’s my favourite street, quiet and charming. I would sit outside by the bar. They have amazing pastries and coffee. I head to my factory around there, see wonderful crafts, check out new materials in the gem market and get inspired – I love designing on the spot.
Lagree or personal training after, then I meet up with my girls for a quick lunch that turns into a long one, maybe with some drinks already! Then back to my showroom, meeting with my team there, planning wonderful things. My son would come down from his room and be all cute for a bit, then I’m off to Old Town to walk around temples or markets there. Then dinner and bar hopping after!
What’s your favourite weekend getaway?

I go to Phuket – we have a villa there. Hua Hin is lovely, too – it’s a lazy beach town a few hours away by car.
