Van Cleef & Arpels’ Mystery Setting – patented in 1933 – eliminated visible metal in stone settings. Hannah Freeman of Hannah Estelle Fine Jewellery says: “Adding subtle details to jewellery has truly become a form of intimacy. It’s a way to keep a loved one close – like a tangible extension of a memory or moment from the past. Annoushka’s wedding rings also include a secret ruby set inside the shank, positioned on the fourth finger where, according to tradition, a vein runs straight to the heart. “It’s these secret touches I love most. They transform something beautiful into something truly personal.” Hidden details also offer a visual advantage. Morgan Mackintosh of LÖF Jewellery is particularly proud of her Rockwell Ring. “I wanted to create something special for the wearer – a hidden detail just for them,” she says. “Beyond that, I wanted to enhance how the piece interacts with light. Since our hands are always in motion, placing stones around the ring, not just on the head, allows it to catch and reflect light from every angle. These hidden touches build a more architectural story, where every contour serves a purpose and adds dimension.” Similarly, Kia Schwaninger, under her eponymous label, takes a like-minded approach. “The back of a jewel is never an afterthought,” she says. “I love using that space to tell a deeper story.” Decorating the back invites a layer of secrecy – details meant not for display, but for the wearer alone. “The beauty of a jewel lies not only in its striking front but in the emotional connection it fosters – through its weight, its feel, and the care woven into every detail. With meaningful symbols or hidden gemstones, each piece becomes more than an heirloom; it becomes a personal talisman.” In an age captivated by the overt and the extravagant, the resurgence of concealed elements in jewellery offers a compelling counterpoint.
