This year marks the 20th anniversary of Marie Antoinette, director Sofia Coppola’s third film. Starring Kirsten Dunst as the Queen of France and Jason Schwartzman as King Louis XVI, the film is still remembered for its performances, cool soundtrack and Oscar-winning costume design, not to mention the countless trays of Ladurée macarons and Manolo Blahnik heels that also played pivotal roles.

The film’s enduring legacy lies in its ability to present historical narrative in a modern, vibrant way. This approach helped cement its status as a piece of cinema that continues to resonate with audiences today.

Coppola’s long-time collaborator Andrew Durham was there to capture the key moments on a still camera. His book Making Marie Antoinette documents the production of the cult movie, from its conception and filming within the hallowed grounds of the Palace of Versailles, to the Cannes premiere. The release of the book coincides with an exhibition at Versailles, on view from September 22 until January 24, 2027.

The exhibition will give visitors a look behind the scenes of Coppola’s cinematic work, featuring original costumes by Milena Canonero, as well as the director’s early storyboards, filming accessories, annotated scripts, set photographs and set design sketches that brought her vision of Marie Antoinette and eighteenth-century France to life.

Screenings held in the very rooms where scenes were shot will allow visitors to revisit key sequences from the film. Beyond cinematic artefacts, the exhibition also explores the film’s cultural resonance, delving into how Coppola’s vision, and the “Marie Antoinette style”, continue to have a lasting impact on art, fashion, design and photography.
