After 20 years in Ginza, Japanese fashion label 45R this month opened a new four-storey flagship in the Tokyo district, ahead of the brand’s 50th anniversary next year. The Seiko Ginza 5-chome Building now houses the label’s denim and natural indigo collections among old brick, stone and warm wood.
At street level, reclaimed details shape the entrance. A teak facade and Takine stone frame an automatic door fashioned from chestnut. Just inside, a small garden separates the street from the shop, with salvaged stepping stones underfoot.

45R worked with traditional carpentry atelier Sankakuya, using solid wood and vintage materials rather than composite boards and glue. The approach draws on a Japanese building tradition in which structures and materials can be dismantled, relocated and reassembled.
Across its four floors, chestnut, teak, hinoki (Japanese cypress), keyaki (Japanese zelkova) and ash have been selected for their grain and scent. The same interest in materials that change over time runs through 45R’s denim and indigo-dyed pieces, designed to soften, fade, and become personal through use.

On the first floor, the focus is on the label’s core wardrobe: selvedge denim (a premium denim that develops a distinctive fade with wear), denim shirts, T-shirts and bandanas alongside the gender-neutral 908 line. Chestnut display tables and a textured, naguri-finished rear wall sit alongside a teak fitting-room floor in the same tactile treatment. The result is characterful without being theatrical.

The second floor turns to seasonal womenswear and Yasuminate, a presentation styled by 45R’s chief designer and executive director, Yasumi Inoue. The space also carries forward elements of the brand’s former Ginza shop, including the familiar curved R-wall and a Bubinga-wood display table reused and reworked for its new setting. Reclaimed keyaki columns and chestnut latticework extend the sense of continuity.

Indigo takes centre stage on the third floor at Ai Shokunin (indigo artisan), the brand’s second space dedicated to its blue-hued craft after the one at the iconic Hankyu Umeda department store in Osaka. Here, 45R traces its entire process, from cultivating indigo plants through to dyeing and garment making, while a sewing room keeps the focus on the labour behind the finished pieces.

Indigo-toned cypress flooring and pearlescent blue plaster provide the backdrop for “Ai-hiko” and “Ai-hime”, boy and girl figurines by sculptor Satoshi Yabuuchi that depict stages of the dyeing process.

The fourth floor, Chabatei, shifts the emphasis from wardrobe to hospitality. Here, matcha is served alongside a programme of exhibitions by Japanese artists, with 24 planned each year. Wood-fired hexagonal floor tiles, a cypress-bark roof and a counter made from kihada (Amur cork tree) lend the space the calm of a small pavilion.
In a district defined by newness, 45R makes a case for materials that improve with time.
