Here’s a story of a bag that begins with a dress – in this case, Dior’s iconic La Cigale dress from 1952. With its tight bodice, sweeping moiré skirt and geometric pleats, it embodied the spirit of couture.

Unsurprisingly, the house’s new creative director Jonathan Anderson – who has already made an impact at Dior thanks to his reworking of the archives through a contemporary sculptural lens – has called La Cigale his favourite dress in the history of fashion.

For Dior’s spring/summer 2026 collection, the dress morphs into the new Dior Cigale bag. It takes the architecture of La Cigale and reworks it with a structured silhouette that still feels light in the hand or on the shoulder.

You see the echoes of La Cigale in the way the new bag curves, and in the sense of movement held in place by a bow – an eternal Dior motif. It’s a clever echo of the original dress’ poise.

Crafted in supple calfskin, the Cigale bag comes in small and medium sizes, and is available in colours that are very Dior: rose soupir, icy blue, trench beige and moiré grey.

These are not shouty hues; they are the sort of shades that go comfortably with a navy coat in Central in February or a bare-shouldered dress at a brunch in June.

The construction, with a single handle, is gratifyingly simple, while the overall weight is kept light enough for it to qualify as an everyday piece rather than an occasional trophy. The branding is also handled with restraint: the name “Dior” is woven into the eyelet of the chain in a nod to those who like their labels present but not too obvious.

What the Cigale represents, ultimately, is a neat summary of Anderson’s project at the house so far: heritage treated as source material rather than an exercise in nostalgia. It takes a mid-century idea about volume and structure, and reworks it for a day that might move from office to gallery opening to late dinner – a bag that carries a reference only fashion insiders will clock, and will fit easily into the rest of your life.
The Dior Cigale bag is Dior and Anderson doing what they do best: couture thinking, reworked with contemporary imagination.
