Parisian fashion house Matières Fécales, known as Fecal Matter in English, is behind Zendaya’s most recent viral red carpet look.
The actress, who plays the Greek goddess Athena in Christopher Nolan’s star-studded film, The Odyssey, stepped out in a stunning white gown with large sculptural wings protruding from the back of the dress at the New York City premiere last Tuesday.

Paired with bronzy, sun-kissed make-up and a half-undone braid, Zendaya’s ethereal look stunned the internet. The brain behind this captivating ensemble was Law Roach, the actress’ long-time stylist and “image architect”.
Matières Fécales shared on Instagram last Wednesday that Roach first saw the Ange dress at the brand’s debut runway collection almost two years ago and requested that they hold it for him.
“We kept our promise and turned down so many great requests, but knew this was the right fit for such an important creation in our archive. This moment is so special and we are so grateful to be part of Law and Zendaya’s fearless vision and legacy,” the post read.

Matières Fécales, founded by Canadian couple Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran, has dressed several A-list celebrities on the red carpet in the short span of a year since its launch in 2025.

Most recently, they designed three custom wedding looks, including the wedding dress, for model Gabbriette, who tied the knot with The 1975’s frontman Matty Healy in Los Angeles last Saturday.

While Matières Fécales may be a relatively new name in the fashion game, the brand has been over 10 years in the making for its founders. Here’s everything you need to know about Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran, the creatives behind one of 2026’s hottest brands.
How did Hannah Rose Dalton get into fashion?

Originally from New Zealand, Hannah Rose Dalton grew up in Montreal, Canada, and went to a private all-girls school before attending LaSalle College Montréal, where she met Bhaskaran.
Dalton underwent a drastic style transformation during her college years, with Bhaskaran describing her as originally “very preppy, very conservative” in an interview the couple did with Dirty Magazine in 2023. “I had long, blonde hair, no make-up. I would never show my body,” Dalton recalled. The description seems a far cry from Dalton today, who is recognised for her shaved head and whiteout make-up.
Dalton was inspired to make her own clothes in 2013, when the tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza Factory in Bangladesh killed more than 1,100 people, most of them garment workers. The fatal incident opened Dalton’s eyes to the poor conditions labour workers were forced to work in, and she decided to respond. “I taught myself how to sew and drape as a protest against the non-glamorous side of fashion,” she said in an interview with 10 Magazine last October.
What is Steven Raj Bhaskaran’s background?

Steven Raj Bhaskaran was born in Montreal to a Guyanese mother and Sri Lankan father. He told Dirty Magazine that he started to experiment with fashion and gender when he studied at LaSalle College, but felt that the school was “not necessarily the safest place for someone like me at the time”.
Bhaskaran was also an avid manga reader growing up, with a strong interest in drawing, he told 10 Magazine. At some point, his sketches turned from swords to shoes. “It was a whole transition of my interest, but it was true of people who were using clothing as armour to protect themselves,” he said.
Bhaskaran grew up in a Mormon household, but he is no longer following the religion, per Dirty Magazine.
How did Matières Fécales come about?

Dalton and Bhaskaran formed a quick friendship after meeting at LaSalle College, which later evolved into a romantic relationship. The couple formed Fecal Matter in 2014 to bring attention to the “toxic excesses” and the artistic devotion that sustains fashion. The project laid the foundation for the duo’s brand, Matières Fécales, founded last year.
“It literally means ‘s***’, but for us, the concept has always been duality,” Bhaskaran said, explaining the meaning behind their brand’s name to Another Magazine last year. “To make that work, the clothes have to be well made – that’s the only way a name like ours makes sense in a luxury space.”

In their interview with Dirty Magazine, Bhaskaran said they were “really fighting against fast fashion” in Fecal Matter’s early days. They found “no authenticity” in the clothing pieces found in stores, so they started creating pieces made of recycled materials and selling them online on platforms such as Depop.
When did Matières Fécales go mainstream?

Fecal Mater’s avant-garde creations caught the eyes of designers such as Rick Owens, leading to collaborations with the American designer’s namesake brand. The duo also worked with houses such as Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen.
In 2019, they created a small collection for Selfridges and were invited by Adrian Joffe to join Dover Street Market. In 2024, Dalton, Bhaskaran, Owens and French fashion figure Michèle Lamy made headlines after they were asked to leave the Forbidden City in Beijing due to their unconventional make-up and fashion styles.

Last year, Dalton and Bhaskaran relaunched Fecal Matter as Matières Fécales, making their Paris Fashion Week debut with their collection titled The Other. The fall/winter 2025 collection featured the Ange dress and unveiled a collaboration with Christian Louboutin, with the signature stiletto heels completely reimagined.
Over the past year, the brand has been worn by A-list celebrities including Lady Gaga, Sarah Paulson and Demi Moore.
