Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Alex Ovechkin for setting an “outstanding record” as the NHL’s all-time top goalscorer.
In a message after Ovechkin’s 895th career goal broke a tie for the record with Wayne Gretzky in the Washington Capitals’ game Sunday against the New York Islanders, Putin said the achievement was something Russians would celebrate.

“I congratulate you on your outstanding record. You have surpassed legendary masters in the number of goals scored in National Hockey League regular-season games,” Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin on Monday.

Breaking Gretzky’s record “has become not only your personal success, but also a real celebration for fans in Russia and abroad,” Putin added. “I wish you health, good fortune [and] fighting spirit to conquer new heights in life and in sports.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Putin and Ovechkin had not yet spoken by phone, but that Putin’s message of congratulations showed the president “highly values Ovechkin’s sporting result”.
Ovechkin has been a backer of Putin in the past and in 2017 set up a group called Putin Team on social media to show support for the Russian president, who was re-elected the following year.
At the time, Ovechkin said, “I just support my country,” adding, “It’s not about political stuff.”
Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev referred to that moment in his own statement of congratulations after Ovechkin broke the record Sunday.
He posted on social media that Ovechkin “remains a member of the Putin team and at the same time one of the main faces of world hockey, a favourite of millions and the NHL top scorer”.

Yup, Anastasia Shubskaya hails from Russia – just like her famous husband.

She was born in 1993, to Vera Glagoleva, a famed Russian actress and filmmaker who directed Ralph Fiennes in Two Women, and businessman Kirill Shubsky, notes The Knot. Her mother died at age 61 in 2017, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Shubskaya, 31, seemingly followed in her mum’s footsteps for a while, studying film with the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, writes The Knot.

Shubskaya worked as a model in Russia, per the New York Post.

She’s appeared in numerous Russian magazines during her career.
How did Alex Ovechkin meet Anastasia Shubskaya?

The couple met for the first time at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, states The Washington Post. Anastasia, who also goes by Nastasiya or Nastya, was about 15 at the time and attended the Games with her father. After she bumped into Ovechkin at one of the events, they quickly formed a friendship and began texting. Although Shubskaya lost her phone and his number a few months later, the duo reconnected when Ovechkin came across her on Instagram in 2015.
When did Alex Ovechkin and Anastasia Shubskaya get married?

The lovebirds’ engagement story is an unconventional one. Shubskaya told The Washington Post how he popped the question while she was in the shower. “I was like, ‘What! Do you understand I am just …’ and he didn’t stop, so I was like, ‘Oh my gosh’ and I got a towel, and I opened the door, and he is on one knee with the flowers and with the ring,” she said. “At first when I opened the door I thought I would kill him. Can you imagine you were in the shower and then you need to get out … oh my God. Why you couldn’t just wait? He said: ‘No, no, no. I wanted to right now.’”

They tied the knot in 2016, signing a marriage certificate in Russia, and had a lavish ceremony a year later. Putin reportedly gifted the newlyweds a tea set at the time, reports The Moscow Times.
Shubskaya appears to get along well with his family. “Nastya understands [Alex] very well, supports him,” Ovechkin’s mother, Tatyana, explained to The Washington Post via a Russian translator. “Nastya understands his soul. She helps him a lot. She cooks great. So yeah, we are very happy that the family is so nice and their son is wonderful. He is so charming, such a great boy. Very smart and athletic, of course.”

The couple are proud parents to two sons: Sergei and Ilya, per People magazine. Both Ovechkin and Shubskaya love to share pics of their family life together on social media.
