James McAvoy was spotted filming in his hometown of Glasgow by delighted locals last December. Except this time, he’s not just in front of the camera, but behind it too. California Schemin’ is the His Dark Materials actor’s directorial debut and centres on a real-life Scottish hip-hop duo. The film is now in post-production.

Thanks to an unusually candid interview, with The Guardian in 2022, we know that the Filth actor, 45, also spends a large portion of his time in the US, because his wife, Lisa Liberati, is American.
“[Philadelphia] is like a second home for me,” he told the newspaper, referring to Liberati’s home city before reportedly clamming up on that subject “for fear of creating tabloid fodder”. McAvoy clearly likes to keep his private life private.
Nationality aside, what else do we know about Lisa Liberati?
She co-founded a fashion brand

Along with friend and business partner Deborah Artaza Barton, who grew up in Buenos Aires, Liberati, 45, co-founded Encommún in 2022. According to the brand’s blurb, Encommún is a conceptual womenswear capsule line “created in conversation with art and the world”.

The pair say they envisage the brand’s fans treating their clothes “as if building an art collection”, one piece at a time. “Fast fashion trends can be fleeting,” Liberati told Fashion Week Daily, “but at Encommún, we focus on creating timeless staples that transcend seasonal trends.”

“We are striving for our Encommún girl to connect with our pieces and have them forever,” she explained to 33 Magazine.
She gets a kick out of stars wearing her clothes

According to an interview with Metal magazine, Liberati admitted that when she and Barton saw actress Jessica Chastain wearing their clothes, it was a big deal for them. “When Jessica wore our jumpsuit and chainmail bra, that was without a doubt a ‘pinch me’ moment for us,” she said.

But she’s no stranger to Hollywood herself …

Liberati has the movie industry to thank for both her marriage and her current business venture. Before getting into fashion, she was an assistant to the The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan, working with him for a decade on films including Split, Devil and The Visit.

She met McAvoy while working on Split and met Barton while the latter was working as a wardrobe designer, also on a Shyamalan production. She credits her time with Shyamalan and McAvoy with helping her carve out her new path in fashion.
“Night wrote and directed all of his films and then began producing and financing them as well, so it allowed me to see creativity from an artistic standpoint as well as a financial/business angle,” Liberati told Flaunt magazine. “Then to watch my husband be so incredibly courageous when expressing his creativity in front of the camera, it’s shown me how to be brave in an intimidating field.”
She married James McAvoy on the DL

McAvoy and Liberati met on the set of Split in 2016, according to the Independent, when McAvoy was still married to first wife Anne-Marie Duff. But it wasn’t until two years later that the pair reportedly began dating.

A couple of months after his 2016 divorce from Duff was finalised, McAvoy and Liberati made their relationship Instagram official. The pair married in secret in 2019, but it wasn’t until that Guardian interview in 2022 that the actor admitted it publicly.
Liberati and McAvoy have one child

McAvoy has a son with Duffy named Brendan, 15. He and Liberati had their first child, a son, in 2022. Around the time his second child was born, McAvoy told The Guardian he had decided to put his family before working long hours on film sets.
“It’s just not possible to be a present family member if you are a filmmaker every week of the year, every month of the year,” he noted. “Theatre’s different – you’re out six nights of the week, invariably. But you’re there more during the day.”
