The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with Leah Dou!
The daughter of Hong Kong singer Faye Wong and celebrated Chinese rock musician Dou Wei may be a nepo baby, but she has undoubtedly forged her own unique career path. The 26-year-old has established herself as an artist who can’t be pigeonholed – whether in music or acting – and her influence doesn’t stop there, mesmerising fans with her androgynous fashion sense and luring in luxury brands.

Recently, the young prodigy graced the stage at Shenzhen’s Strawberry Music Festival and wowed audiences when she duetted with Hong Kong icon Karen Mok on the Chinese talent show Infinity and Beyond, according to Asia One. The duo sang Stefanie Sun’s “The Dark Day” and netizens can’t stop praising her.
It has also been reported that Dou, real name Dou Jing-tong, is set to play a role opposite Eric Wang in an upcoming Chinese drama titled Her Way To Survive, marking her first foray into television acting, per Singapore’s 8 Days.

She won her first award at 22 years old

At 22, the young star received the best supporting actress award at the Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF) for her role in Chen Jian-bin’s The Eleventh Chapter (2019). Dou played the role of Jian-bin’s step daughter and also shared the screen with acclaimed Chinese actress Zhou Xun.

In 2021, she starred in her second film – Queena Li’s Bipolar opposite Kailang He. Dou also previously earned a notable nomination at the prestigious Golden Horse Awards for best original film song for her song titled “Soul Mate”, featured in the film of the same name (2016).
Now, as Dou prepares for her TV debut in Her Way To Survive, she fully commits to her role as seen in the teaser video, hitting the gym and honing culinary skills to play the part, per Singapore’s 8 Days.

Her brand endorsements

With almost 300,000 followers on Instagram, it should come as no surprise that brands are drawn to Dou. In 2019, Dou made waves in a Levi’s Japan ad campaign, showcasing the brand’s iconic long-sleeve shirts and engineered jeans, which made a triumphant comeback after a two-decade absence.
In the ad, she was paired with Japanese actor Takuya Kimura and together they filmed the ad in a subway setting, creating a visually striking and memorable collaboration.

Last year, the young artist also appeared in Korea’s SK-II Pitera Essence campaign, targeted at the skincare brand’s Gen Z customers. She starred alongside Twice’s Mina, Zhang Zi-feng and Japanese actress Ayaka Miyoshi. Dou has been SK-II’s brand ambassador since 2017 and said that she aims to help the brand to explore the concept of gender, as reported by Radii.

She was also named as Shu Uemura’s global brand ambassador in March. The brand wrote on its website that choosing Dou means “exemplifying our commitment to daring and bold self-expression”.

Her impressive music career

Often called a nepo baby, Dou was only one year old when her laugh was sampled in her mum’s song “Tong”.
In 2012, Dou released her first song “With You” and scored her first hit single with 2015’s “River Run” from her first album. This spring also saw the release of new single “Monday” from her third album Spring Outing, which has garnered over 550,000 views on YouTube at the time of writing.

But it may come as a surprise to learn that Dou didn’t follow the traditional academic path to success. She dropped out of school at 16 and later withdrew from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, opting instead to spend years moving from one friend’s home to another.
She told The Cut in 2017 that she didn’t want to spend time in classes that she already knew wouldn’t contribute to her music career. Later that year, Billboard described her as “calm” and as possessing a wisdom beyond her years.

For her, music has been both an interest and a constant companion in life, accompanying her growth, she told China’s Complex: “I remember growing up listening to only certain types of music, but as I grew up, I began to broaden my musical horizons and embrace all kinds of music. This openness has also influenced the way I relate to others and how I feel about life. Attitudes towards all kinds of things.”

She loves to thrift and attend fashion shows

Beyond her films and music, Leah Dou’s fashion choices always seem to grab the public’s attention. Known for her androgynous style, netizens love to deconstruct her looks.
But did you know that Dou loves to thrift? In the 2017 interview with The Cut, Dou revealed that her favourite places for vintage finds were the US and UK.

Meanwhile, she has made waves in the fashion world, securing front-row seats at prestigious shows like Chanel in 2016. Last year, she turned heads at Paris Fashion Week with her striking all-black leather coat with seemingly no top underneath.

As an avid anime fan, Dou cherishes her black-and-white cat (named Beans) and regularly shares adorable moments with her furry companion on her Instagram.
Despite living a seemingly picture-perfect life, Dou, like many of us, says she often battles negative thoughts. She told Nowness China that she was “easily entangled in [her] own thoughts” but finds solace in travelling and mindful practices.

“One of the things that travel has benefited me a lot is that it keeps reminding you to jump out of the mental games you tend to play with yourself,” she said in the video interview.
