Creatine for women: benefits for strength, brain health and hormones – without the bulk
STORYCarolina Malis

Long linked with men’s bodybuilding, the supplement is now proven to boost women’s health – even Balenciaga is getting in on the action
Creatine has had a pretty fixed identity for most of its commercial life. It came in enormous tubs, it lived next to things called Xtreme Mass and Hyper Shred, and it was, for a very long time, something men bought before lifting heavy things. Most women never questioned whether it applied to them, and most brands never bothered to suggest that it might. But at some point, searches for creatine for women started climbing, and by 2025, Thorne, one of the supplement industry’s most credible names, had tapped Grammy-winning artist Ciara specifically to make the case that creatine wasn’t just for the guy with the bulk bag.
Our body produces creatine naturally, stored in muscle and topped up through food. Women generally have lower total creatine stores than men, around 70 to 80 per cent less, a gap that, according to Dr Mark Kovacs, founder of the Kovacs Institute and former director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, “creates a scenario where women may have more room for improvement from supplementation”.
