At some point over the past few decades, matching your nails to your outfit became something fashion quietly reclassified as try-hard. The rule had come from the 1950s, when getting dressed was essentially a matching exercise: nails coordinated to your lipstick; shoes to your bag; accessories to all of the above. Cosmetics companies sold polish and lipstick in sets, on the logic that a woman’s look should tell one unified story.
By the late 1960s, youth culture started dismantling that logic, and the coordinated manicure drifted fast into the category of things you simply didn’t do. It started to read as overdone, too obviously assembled, and even though nobody wrote the rule down, everyone somehow knew it.
