When patriarch Yeung Wing-wah was thinking of renovating his long-time family home on The Peak, he had a vision.
Younger son Kevin Yeung Iat-seng and wife Jude Tsang Yeuk-wa had returned from living in Britain and planned to start a family of their own. Why not make it a spiritual sanctuary where three generations would live together?
The couple were instantly on board.
“I grew up in this apartment with my brother and sister,” says Kevin Yeung, a property investor, who, with Cantopop singer-songwriter Tsang, welcomed their firstborn in 2025. “Now that my child is also growing up here, I feel the home carries a sense of passing down through generations, making moving back even more meaningful.”


Built in the 1960s, the 2,500 sq ft (232 square metre), three-bedroom apartment offered elevated city and harbour views that provided an inspirational canvas for Soil Studios co-founders OJ Miu Ka-kei and Alexander Ho Lik-shan, both of whom had been introduced to the family by a mutual friend.
The goal, Ho says, was to build a haven that connected with nature and carried family memories forward, accommodating both Buddhist faith and multigenerational needs.
Paying homage to the classical Minnan architecture of Fujian, the family’s ancestral homeland in mainland China, the designers replaced existing dividing walls with three timber-framed arched portals as the new “spine” of the home.
As Ho explains, the gentle curves are a contemporary translation of the sequenced archways and intricate joinery found in traditional homes and buildings in the Minnan region in southern Fujian. In this apartment, their presence restores order and rhythm to a previously disconnected floor plan while also solving a design problem by concealing structural columns.
Beneath the first, smallest arch by the foyer, an auspicious “three rams bringing bliss” sculpture symbolises the intergenerational make-up of the household. “The sheep serve as an emotional anchor in the spatial narrative, embodying family metaphors and the close bonds among its members,” Ho says.

The medium and largest arches span the living and dining zone, the social heart of the home, where a life-size wooden sculpture of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy (commonly known as Kwun Yum in Hong Kong), is given pride of place. Having been in the family for many years, it now holds special meaning for the young couple.
On a trip to Putuo Mountain in China’s Zhejiang province, a sacred site dedicated to Guanyin, Kevin and Jude prayed for a baby.
“After our return, we found out we were expecting our son,” Kevin says. “We do believe in a higher power, and that somehow Guanyin helped us. Every time I walk past that statue in our living room, I say, ‘Thank you.’”
In subtly defining functional zones, the three progressive arches allow spaces to interpenetrate so that even when family members are in different areas, they can still see each other.
“Fluted glass partitions in key areas [the study and kitchen] maintain a sense of transparency while ensuring privacy,” Miu says. “They also ensure that every main space can engage in dialogue with the view outside, letting the scenery become the most precious artwork on display.”
One of these screens encloses a multifunctional third bedroom that can take on various roles as needed, pivoting from band practice studio for Jude, to home office for Kevin, to occasional guest room or nursery. Curves in the ceiling, walls and custom-made furniture continue as a unifying theme, complemented by tactile finishes in timber and stone, and a nature-inspired neutral palette.

In one, bedlinen in cobalt blue not only complies with feng shui requirements (being calming and meditative) but also echoes the deep hue of the harbour view. Above the bed hangs another spiritually meaningful design feature: a calligraphy work bearing the Buddhist saying “free from attachment”.
From big picture to small details, every design element has purpose. With the safety of the elder and younger generations in mind, the designers avoided sharp corners in the bathrooms. And at every turn, windows frame different pictures of nature, the shifting shades of light and colour reflected on the matt terracotta walls of the apartment’s airy interior.
For Ho and Miu, this project was a rare and deeply moving experience.
“When the family first shared their story – their Fujian roots, their Buddhist practice and their wish to bring three generations closer – we knew this wasn’t going to be an ordinary design project,” Ho says. “It became a quiet dialogue between past and present.
“The three portals, for instance, emerged from conversations about the grandparents’ childhood memories and a desire to gently frame, not divide, how the family moves through the home. Seeing those timber arches take shape felt like weaving their ancestry into the very bones of a modern apartment. We came away not just as designers, but as people who’d been taught something about what home really means.”
For Kevin and Jude, the happiness imbued in the home is an enduring legacy of the renovation.
“The apartment feels more gentle, more organic – almost like it’s breathing with you,” Kevin says. “It’s a blessing from my father to be sharing this beautiful environment with Jude and our baby. I feel like I am following in his footsteps.”

Tried + tested

Even with a voice as polished as Jude’s, not everyone wants to listen to constant musical practice. That is why Soil Studios specified sound-absorbing materials for the multifunctional band room, which multitasks as a third bedroom and study.
Polyform Eos Prism acoustic wall covering from Texdecor is a polyester faux-suede textile on a polyurethane foam backing. According to the company, the acoustic absorbency of this wallcovering range varies from α 0.15 to 0.30 depending on the desired thickness of the foam (7mm and 5mm), which equates to absorbing 15 to 30 per cent of sound energy that hits it.
A curtain for the glass sliding door that encloses the music room – Pico Cookie thick pile polyester velvet from Villa Nova, supplied by Wallpaper+ – provides another layer of sound absorbency.
To any parent of a rising star, and their neighbours, you are welcome.
