Several of Hong Kong’s leading coffee specialists have opened new branches alongside some intriguing newcomers.
Read on for our pick of the five new cafes to visit in May.
1. Artista Perfetto

While Hollywood Road may be better known for nightlife with its collection of bars and fast-food shops under the Mid-Levels Escalator, a new addition offers early birds a quality fuelling stop.
The third branch of Artista Perfetto is its tiniest yet, with enough room for just a few customers to stand and drink inside. The signature dirty (cold milk with hot espresso floated on top) is just as good here.

2. Halfway Coffee

Halfway Coffee’s new branch is just as interesting as the others in its portfolio. Known for setting up in venues with a certain patina – the Sheung Wan location was a former traditional cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style cafe) – the team has this time taken over a charming local diner, retaining many of the original elements, such as the stainless-steel countertops and plastic menu boards.

3. Goodin’ Out

Tai Kok Tsui’s Goodin’ Out has landed on Hong Kong Island, with a sizeable space in Wan Chai’s Star Street area. It is part of the latest cohort of Korean-style cafes, and is instantly recognisable with its industrial aesthetic and creative coffee drinks.
The menu features brunch items such as ricotta shakshuka and croffles (croissant-waffle hybrids), as well as drinks such as golden cream Einspanner coffee and ice fig soda.
16 Moon Street, Wan Chai
4. Blu Blu Brew

Located near the northeastern quadrant of Victoria Park, this welcoming spot eschews the usual hardwood or plastic furniture, instead opting for cosy couches and marble tabletops for a more comfortable touch.
The Italian coffee beans come courtesy of Hong Kong roasters One Plus One Roastery, and the cafe is conveniently located for access to the East Coast Boardwalk, should you want to take your coffee to go on a harbourside stroll.

5. Tai Ping

Nestled on Sheung Wan’s charming Tai Ping Shan Street, this new coffee spot doubles as a florist offering big bouquets for special occasions and smaller sets of blooms for an everyday pick-me-up. The flowers come packaged in the shop’s coffee cup and cup holder, meaning you can get blooms with your brew and still have one hand free.
