This is the 85th instalment in a biweekly series profiling major Hong Kong pop culture figures of recent decades.
For lovers of Cantopop music, Wyman Wong Wai-man is a pre-eminent architect of modern Hong Kong’s emotional landscape.
Through the classic songs he has written for top singers from Eason Chan Yick-shun to Miriam Yeung Chin-wah, the 57-year-old has chronicled the loves and heartbreaks of a generation. Yet to define him strictly as a lyricist is to ignore a sprawling, multi-hyphenate career.
Born on May 21, 1969, Wong showed a remarkable linguistic proficiency from an early age and consistently achieved high marks in literature. As a teen he started writing freelance fashion and lifestyle columns for newspapers and magazines – work he continued even as a social science student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

“Writing is an instinct to me,” he told HK Magazine in a 2008 interview. “I sit down and I write. It’s not a hard job for me.”
In his final year at university in 1991, he won a Commercial Radio Hong Kong pop quiz contest, impressing producers who offered him a part-time DJ role on the spot. Upon graduating, he transitioned directly into a full-time radio position, marking the beginning of a new era for Cantopop.
Wong made his debut as a lyricist in 1993, working with the popular rap duo Softhard. In 1995, he gained significant recognition for his biting, raw emotional lyrics for Amanda Lee Wai-man’s breakout hit “(You Will Not Have) A Happy Ending”.
In 1998, he received the best original film song honour at the 17th Hong Kong Film Awards for Leo Ku Kui-kei’s megahit “Enjoy Yourself Tonight”, which he wrote for the film Cause We Are So Young.

Shaping the sound of a generation
That same year, Wong left full-time radio to devote himself to songwriting, fashion journalism and acting. Over the following decade, he cemented his status as one of Cantopop’s top two lyricists, alongside Lin Xi (or Lam Chik, real name Albert Leung Wai-man), with the press dubbing them “The Two Wai-mans”.
Wong has gone on to write more than 1,500 songs, including career-defining hits for many of Hong Kong’s major singers. These include “Bike” (2001) for Eason Chan, “Pain Love” (2001) for Joey Yung Cho-yee, “Wild Child” (2001) for Miriam Yeung and “Wedding Invitation Street” (2008) for Kay Tse On-kay – songs that would come to symbolise 2000s Hong Kong pop culture.
Beyond stand-alone hits, Wong became celebrated for constructing interconnected thematic narratives across different artists, most notably the tragic “Trash Quartet” – which included “Vortex” (2000), a duet by Cass Phang Ling and Anthony Wong Yiu-ming, and “Trash” (1998) by Candy Lo Hau-yam.
His trophy cabinet grew steadily and culminated in the rare feat of receiving both the best lyricist and hall of fame lyricist awards at the 2013 Chinese Music Media Awards.

Subverting the norms
At the same time, Wong was building an equally influential career as a fashion journalist and cultural commentator. From the late 1990s, he wrote long-running style columns for a wide range of publications that were later compiled into essay collections.
He is widely credited with introducing high-fashion concepts into compelling narratives using local Cantonese slang, humour and pop-culture analogies, bridging the gap between the rarefied world of Parisian catwalks and the everyday aspirations of Hong Kong fashion enthusiasts.
Wong has long been a front-row regular at Paris, Milan and London fashion weeks, attending as an industry commentator and respected voice in those circles. Underpinning all of this is his legendary personal archive, a collection of rare designer fashion built over three decades.

In his 2008 interview with HK Magazine, Wong traced his fashion obsession back to his childhood, noting his mother was a tailor who frequently performed impromptu catwalk shows at home.
“Gender is a social stereotype, and that concept is outdated in modern society,” he added. “Sure, in ancient times there was a clear division of labour, so men and women were assigned certain personality traits. But now we don’t need that kind of differentiation. Just let it be!”
This philosophy heavily permeated his lyricism. Wong was instrumental in subverting gender norms and pushing LGBTQ visibility within mainstream Cantopop, writing queer anthems such as Denise Ho Wan-see’s “Rolls. Royce”.
While he never hid his sexuality on the personal front, he made a rare formal tribute to his partner of over a decade, psychiatrist Dr Stephen Ng Wai-man, during his remote acceptance speech at the ViuTV Chill Club Music Awards on January 1, 2023.

Spectacle on stage and screen
Wong’s glamorous style extended far beyond the page. Styling Cantopop stars, including Denise Ho and Joey Yung, for their tours and residencies, Wong brought the avant-garde catwalk directly onto concert stages, music videos and album covers.
The crowning achievement in this realm came in February 2012 with “Concert YY”, his six-night songwriting showcase at the Hong Kong Coliseum, which he transformed into a live catwalk. Wong personally coordinated haute couture looks for more than 40 guest performers who sang 84 of his songs, turning a retrospective of his musical career into a visual spectacle.
Though Wong is selectively private, he and Miriam Yeung – once close creative partners – experienced a publicised falling-out in the mid-2000s. The painful end of their friendship inspired Wong to write Eason Chan’s 2006 hit “Best Bad Friend”, but in 2012, Yeung made a surprise, heavily pregnant appearance at “Concert YY”, making peace before a sold-out crowd.
Meanwhile, Wong maintained a prolific acting and hosting career that spanned from 1995 through the mid-2010s.
Characterised by his stout physique, shaved head and witty delivery, he frequently played eccentric sidekicks or sharp-tongued friends in films such as 2002’s Love Undercover and The Lion Roars. He also hosted several television programmes, famously spending HK$500,000 on designer outfits for his role fronting ATV’s game show 1 vs 100 in 2006.

Advocacy and the ‘Cantopop Multiverse’
Yet beneath this flamboyant showbiz persona, Wong was becoming an increasingly outspoken advocate amid Hong Kong’s shifting sociopolitical landscape.
His vocal support for civil rights, local culture and free expression during Hong Kong’s 2014 and 2019 social movements resulted in several of his songs being quietly pulled or censored on mainland Chinese streaming platforms.
During the debate over Hong Kong’s controversial 2014 copyright amendment bill, Wong granted full permission for netizens to parody his copyrighted lyrics. Accepting lyricist of the year at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards on January 1, 2016, he sarcastically remarked that if the law passed, he might be spending his next award season in prison for making parodies.
In late 2021, Wong relocated to London. He established an overseas base while continuing to write full-time, providing lyrics for new Hong Kong singers such as Mirror members Keung To and Edan Lui Cheuk-on, Gareth. T (Tong Ling-shan), and Cloud Wan Ho-ying.

The move did nothing to diminish his influence; if anything, it broadened his perspective. Between 2020 and 2025, he won the Ultimate Song Chart Awards’ lyricist of the year title for six consecutive years.
In both 2022 and 2023, he claimed the ViuTV Chill Club Music Awards’ lyricist of the year title. During his remote acceptance speech in 2022, he introduced his philosophy of a “Cantopop Multiverse”, describing a global Cantonese music community that transcended geographical boundaries.
Although Wong maintains a tight-knit circle of long-time friends in Hong Kong and remains one of the city’s most influential lyricists and fashion figures, his legacy across the mainland China border remains highly contested.
While Wong’s name is sometimes scrubbed from mainland Chinese broadcasts and music platforms – reduced to a mere “Anonymous” – this stark attempt at erasure only echoes louder, paradoxically underscoring his enduring cultural weight in his home city.
