This is the 81st instalment in a biweekly series profiling major Hong Kong pop culture figures of recent decades.
Celebrities who reach their mid-nineties have usually long since traded the spotlight for a rocking chair, but not Bowie Woo Fung, who, at 94 years old, is likely still practising his footwork.
On June 7, 2026, he took the stage for his sixth concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum, and in doing so set the Guinness World Record as the oldest Chinese artist to hold a solo concert. It is a remarkable feat, especially considering that Woo has never released a full-length studio album.
The occasion was notable not only for the milestone, but also for Woo’s enviable guest list, which included “godchildren” Jacky Cheung Hok-yau and Nick Cheung Ka-fai, alongside fellow pop icons such as Andy Lau Tak-wah, Eason Chan Yick-shun and Liza Wang Ming-chun.
Born Woo Kai-sau in Guangzhou, in China’s Guangdong province, in 1932, Woo adopted the stage name “Fung” (maple) because maple leaves remain “red” – which also means “popular” in Chinese – year-round, thus symbolising his hope of an evergreen career.
Known affectionately to generations of Hongkongers as “Sau Gor” (Big Brother Sau), Woo has certainly lived up to his name, continuing to serve as a bridge between the black-and-white grit of post-war Hong Kong and the glitz of the modern era.

From antiques to the silver screen
Woo came from a family of antique dealers and, after he graduated from secondary school, his father signed him up for an apprenticeship with a fellow dealer in the hope he would continue the family legacy. Woo survived only a year in the trade.
“My dad really wanted me to be in antiques, but I had absolutely no interest,” Woo said in a 2021 interview with Ming Pao Weekly.
After spotting a casting call in a newspaper, he secretly applied for an audition with Tai Seng Film Company, a Hong Kong studio that closed in 1964. Woo signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the company at the age of 21 despite his father’s disapproval, and subsequently left home.
Woo spoke with a slight stutter at this point in his life, but to the directors’ relief, he was able to lose it once he disappeared into character.

Woo’s entry into film was almost a lark. His debut in the comedy film Men’s Hearts (1953) made him an overnight sensation. Despite it being his first role, he was already the male lead, acting opposite the actress and Cantonese opera performer Katie Fong Yim-fun.
On-screen, Woo possessed a wholesome, kinetic energy that contrasted with the more stoic leads of the time. While others specialised in swordplay or melodrama, Woo excelled in the burgeoning genre of Cantonese musicals.
Despite the toughness of the early days of the industry, he prevailed. In 1968, he was selected as one of the top 10 film and drama stars by the now-defunct Hong Kong newspaper Wah Kiu Yat Po (Overseas Chinese Daily News), which published an annual ranking.
In the late 1960s, he frequently collaborated with fellow pop idols Josephine Siao Fong-fong and Connie Chan Po-chu, including in the 1966 musical films Colourful Youth and Maiden’s Heart. These credits earned him the nickname “Dance King Sau”.
Meanwhile, Woo’s charm stood in friendly contrast to the suave, romantic persona of Patrick Tse Yin. As the era’s two premier male leads, they vied for top billing, acted opposite the same leading ladies and even teamed up for the 1960 buddy comedy My Intimate Partner.

A second act in television
As Hong Kong’s Cantonese-language filmmaking slowed down in the 1970s, Woo transitioned to television. He later joined TVB during its golden era in 1987. His first acting credit for the broadcaster was a leading part in the 1988 show Everybody’s Somebody’s Favourite, though his next project was a background role.
In a 2026 interview on the online programme Inside TVB City, he credited this successful shift to his wife, Lui Wing-ho. He initially struggled to accept his fading relevance, but Lui reminded him: “Since you love performing and you have so many years of experience, it doesn’t matter if you’re the lead or supporting character!”
For decades afterwards, Woo remained a fixture on Hong Kong television, playing the wise patriarch, the bumbling comedic uncle or the sophisticated grandfather. He became a “family member” to millions of viewers through series such as Looking Back in Anger (1989) and the award-winning sitcom War of the Genders (2000).
Woo’s off-screen persona – always punctual, never complaining – made him a role model for professional ethics. In the same TVB interview, he recalled an incident where he tried to sneak out of a hospital to a film set, resulting in a team of medical staff frantically looking for him.

Family sacrifices and celebrity godchildren
His feverish dedication to his craft resulted in many sacrifices. His 1957 marriage to his first love, Lui, was kept secret at the behest of his boss, who feared it might derail his career. Woo also expressed regret for not spending more time with his five children and Lui, his wife of 59 years who died in 2016.
“I didn’t get along well with [the kids] back then,” he told television producer Gary Yeung Siu-hung in a YouTube interview in 2025. “I rarely met them because I was so busy with work. Whenever I returned home, they would all be sleeping.”
But as he reflected on his relationship with his children, Woo was ultimately glad that they did not follow him into the entertainment industry. “Being in the spotlight is very tough,” he told Ming Pao Weekly. “You’re filming in the day, you’re filming at night, all until you’re exhausted.”
Even if none of his children joined the industry, Woo has no shortage of celebrity godchildren. He is now the godfather to more than a dozen Hong Kong stars, including “Heavenly Kings” Jacky Cheung and Leon Lai Ming, as well as Cantopop diva Sandy Lam Yik-lin.

A lasting legacy
Woo’s age has proven no barrier to the whirlwind of media attention around him. When his wife died in 2016, media outlets falsely reported that he had begun a new relationship with frequent scene partner Helena Law Lan, who is now 91 years old. Instead, Woo described their relationship as akin to siblings.
In the 2026 interview with TVB, he laughed off this years-long rumour, saying, “I really don’t know where it came from; it’s been spreading for several years, and it’s still spreading. But it doesn’t matter; it’s rare to still have news at the age of 93!”
Another rumour that has followed Woo for decades is that he was martial arts icon Bruce Lee’s acting instructor. They were friends, of course, but when asked specifically about the rumour, Woo simply said: “Don’t trust everything you read online!”
Having made nearly 400 films and nurtured a 70-year career in which his path crossed with Hong Kong’s most famous legends, Woo received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards in 2023.

In his 14-minute acceptance speech, he said, “My friends have always asked me why I never go out and fight for roles against other actors. They tell me that, in the entertainment industry, you’ve got to fight and compete.”
He then uttered the Chinese proverb on stage, “Where there is musk, there is a natural fragrance” – meaning that one can prioritise friendship and camaraderie in the cutthroat industry and still emerge victorious.
While his handprints and autograph are already enshrined on the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, Woo refuses to become a static monument to the city’s cinematic history.
He still attends galas and cracks jokes with reporters, and credits his longevity to frequent walks and an active mind. True to the maple leaf that inspired his moniker, Woo remains a vibrant presence, looking as though he might still break into song and dance at any moment.
