Anyone planning to give the gift of music for Christmas should seriously consider Aristo Sham’s new solo piano album.
Timeline, released by Universal Music Hong Kong on November 7, is a thoughtfully compiled selection based on the current world tour by the 2025 Van Cliburn gold medallist. At its core are transcriptions by Ferruccio Busoni, flanked by two unadapted works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Edvard Grieg.
Concert pianists generally avoid recording Bach in the pure form, possibly for fear of being described as “unauthentic” or too romantic. Sham embraces the baroque spirit, and his arresting and vividly captured Toccata in C minor would keep the purists happy.
An agitated, monophonic opening sparkles, and as his four-part adagio unfolds, Sham impresses with subtle pedal usage and the utmost finesse in phrasing and voice leading.
The no-nonsense fugue then fires up just as things appear to have faded towards a conclusion, and the Hong Kong-born pianist’s contrapuntal play oozes joy and confidence, peppered with crisply executed embellishments along the way and making for highly satisfying – with zero intervention – Bach listening indeed.
When it comes to Bach, the Italian romantic all-rounder Busoni (1866-1924) was one of the best-known “transcribers”, churning out a mixed bag of adaptations, many of which find great favour among pianists today.

Going by this album and his recent recitals on the heels of his Van Cliburn victory, Sham is certainly one of them.
Interestingly, the young pianist juxtaposes a tranquil, legato interpretation of Busoni’s relatively “unadulterated” transcription of Bach’s chorale, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers awake, the voice commands), with Busoni’s fleshed-out Chaconne from the Violin Partita No 2 in D minor.
Where the chorale is a warm, comforting musical embrace, Sham’s cerebral, highly polished reading of the Chaconne is a far more complex affair; a compelling roller-coaster ride of emotions that unfolds with resonance, hushed with great tenderness in the pianissimo echoes, and lent such clarity in its contrapuntal lines and movement that it could well be the musical equivalent of a city’s finely mapped metro system.
Sham also unearths Busoni’s lesser-known harmonic stylisations of Brahms’ final composition, the Six Chorale Preludes for Organ.
In this salutation to youth and its ideals, and Brahms’ quasi farewell to life, Sham approaches the first prelude of the set, Herzlich tut mich erfreuen (My inmost heart rejoiceth), with dignity in its undulations and generous sustaining pedal.
A typically “Brahmsian” autumn stroll then follows in Schmücke dich, o liebe seele (Deck thyself out, o my soul), where Sham eases into cadence points with much finesse.
Melancholic beauty clearly comes from the heart in the subsequent Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen (A rose breaks into bloom). In the two contrasting settings of Herzlich tut mich verlangen (My inmost heart doth yearn), Prelude No 9 is full and strident, whereas Prelude No 10 is far more intimate, showing Sham at his most reflective.

Ringing true to the characteristics of an organ chorale, the set rounds off with a Welt, ich muss dich lassen (Oh world, I e’en must leave thee), where sorrow is only fleeting and any sombreness associated with mortality takes a back seat to gratitude for life.
After that, Sham is in his element, returning to Busoni’s “intellectual virtuosity” compositional style with a plunge into the Variations on Chopin Prelude in C minor and offering a different array of tonal colour.
The fluent flurries that follow Sham’s sombre presentations of Chopin’s theme are as clean as a whistle in this recording, and when he tackles the exotic musical styles, from nods to impressionism to Liszt-like rapid-fire staccato and virtuosic fireworks, Sham shows abundant creativity and delivers it with flair and panache.
Just as the Busoni arrangements begin to overwhelm on this album, Sham ends with an original. As a Baroque suite conceived in the Romantic era, the brightly coloured Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg is a Nordic “time capsule” of sorts.
Sham exudes youthful energy in his opening Praeludium and plenty of tenderness in the ensuing Bach-like Sarabande.
Aside from a weighty, laboured conclusion to his Gavotte, the dance charms for the most part and also encases a delightfully lilted Musette.
The tranquillity of the Air, much like the finale’s middle interlude, is aptly expressive and expansive, but the fabulous Rigaudon is a winner, with Sham putting on a veritable contrapuntal circus that is punctuated with pinpoint staccato to round off the suite and a very fine album.
Timeline was recorded in Meistersaal, Berlin, on a Steinway piano in October 2025.
